There are several ways to look at “disability” but generally, it is considered to be a condition where a person is hampered in some form or the other from carrying out the normal day to day activities. The specific state of disability will vary from person to person, ranging from mild conditions like wearing reading glasses to the more serious like a paralytic spinal cord injury restricting an individual to a wheelchair round the clock for life. In recent times though, governments and top bodies in this field have clarified specifically the different stages of disabilities.
For this post, the focus will be on disability support in Queensland, Australia. Most people with a disability primarily depend on friends and family for support. But help also comes from two quarters. One is from the government of Australia and the States that offer a range of services to, directly and indirectly, help those with disabilities. The second is from the community and private sectors that provide resources in this area. Apart from direct disability services, the government also has mainstream healthcare services that can be availed of by people with disabilities. As the two – public and private – sectors overlap in many areas of disability supportin Queensland, it is very difficult to accurately estimate the quantum of resources spent on these services.
If you have a disability or are providing services that take care of the disabled, you will get relief packages from the Government of Australia. These services are available through government agencies or the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS is a joint scheme that is funded by the Australian Government and the States and territories and replaces the current and previous support services funded by the states and territories. The NDIS is operated by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) of the Australian Government.
