  8. International Cooperation Activities • Upon invitation by Dr. Torild van Eck (ORFEUS General Secretary), C. Özturan and L. Jordanovski attended the Third Annual Meeting of the NERIES Project, Utrecht, the Netherlands on June 29-July 1, 2009. The costs of travel, lodging and registration were sponsored by the NERIES project. • Had technical talks with the IT personnel Allessandro Spinuso and Luca Trani of ORFEUS/KNMI about the newly released NERIES web services that provide seismology data during the Third Annual Meeting of the NERIES Project. • Started development of a high level C++ based grid plug-in for accessing seismology data by using the NERIES web services. • A preliminary version of the plug-in for downloading waveform files has been released (can be downloaded at the seismology wiki page)

Earthquake Location Finding - ELF • Main Developer:MehmetYılmazer, Boğaziçi University, Turkey • Description • A HYPO71 based application that finds earthquake locations and magnitudes • from continuous waveform data files reported by stations. • After an earthquake, the location of an earthquake needs to be reported to • various authorities for necessary actions to be taken. • Regional collaborators and their roles • Collaboration in usage: METU – TR, Armenia • Collaboration by data supplying: U. of Ss Cyril and Methodius (MK) • Number of registered users : 9 • Web page / Documentation: • Computed earthquake results can be displayed using SDS web interface: • http://erciyes.cmpe.boun.edu.tr/seegridsci/sds • Documentation not ready • Current state : • Testing Grid-mode

Earthquake Location Finding - ELF • Application Architecture • Application uses continuous waveform data archived by the JRA1 • SDSAS • Quarter-5 Activities • Helped Armenia install and run ELF application. Armenia is testing the • application. • A bug was discovered in one of the test cases reported by Armenia – currently • working on resolving it. • Future plans • Perform tests on massive historical data • Train/help other partners on using this program

Numerical Modeling of MantleConvection – NMMC3D • Main Developer: BálintSüle, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary • Description • Provides model of the thermal convection in the Earth's mantle • Solves numerically the equations of thermal convection • The mantle convection is the driving force of the plate tectonics • Results will help us to understand better the dynamics of the Earth • Regional collaborators and their roles • Collaboration in testing of the application and interpretation of the results: • Boğaziçi University (TR) • Number of registered users : 5 • Web page / Documentation: • P-GRADE portal, • Online material on GASUC web page: http://www.lpds.sztaki.hu/gasuc/index.php?m=6&r=6 • Current state: • Grid-mode deployed, Testing in Grid-mode

Numerical Modeling of MantleConvection – NMMC3D • Application Architecture • The gridification process included developing a specialized web interface • extension to P-GRADE Portal, specifically tailored for the application's needs. • An interface suitable for this was developed using the Application Specific • Module of P-GRADE Portal 2.7. • Quarter-5 Activities • Further developments • User interface enhanced • Updated ISGTW article • Future plans • Training scenario with P-GRADE

SDSASApplication Service • Main Developer: Can Özturan, Boğaziçi University, Turkey • Description • Various scripts for seismic data organization using AMGA and LFC • C++ iterators providing high level access to seismology data • Web page / Documentation: • Documentation available for the version released in April • Quarter-5 Activities • Installation at Armenian site • Development of a plug-in for accessing NERIES data on grid • Provide a high level C++ interface to NERIES web services so that seismologists can access NERIES data on the grid without the need not to learn soap, xml, xml parsing • Develop using libcurl and libxml which are readily available on SL • Release of a preliminary version of the plug-in

  24. Status of Data Collection • Note: • Greek,Romanian,Bulgarian and Hungarian data can be obtained from NERIES, so there is no problem. • Serbian and Albanian networks are not on NERIES. We should get data from these countries (today we have received a seismic data DVD from Albania)
