  3. Nationalism people should be loyal to and unite with those with whom they share common a culture and land OUTCOME: leads to INDEPENDENCE from colonial rulers

  4. INDIA Mohandas Gandhi 1869-1948 VIETNAM Ho Chi Minh 1890-1969

  5. India • Ruled by the British since 1613 • most populous and valuable colony of the British Empire • known as the jewel in the British crown "New crowns for old ones!“ An 1876 political cartoon of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881) making Queen Victoria Empress of India.

  6. Some Indians went along with British rule • Others did not The Battle of Arcot. In 1751, Robert Clive and 300 men faced an Indian army of 10,000. The Indians had many pieces of artillery and their attack was led by armoured elephants. But the encounter lasted only an hour, at the end of which time the Indian army was in flight.

  10. Ho Chi Minh • Vietnamese nationalist leader • Turns to the Communist Party for help in fighting against the French • Viet Minh – league fighting for the independence of Vietnam from the French • First French Indochina War (1946-1954)

Geneva Conference 1954 • After the First Indochina War, Vietnam is “temporarily” split into two different countries along the 17th parallel • North • Communist(backed by China & Soviet Union) • Ho Chi Minh (leader) • South • Democratic(backed by U.S.) • Ngo Dinh Diem, military dictatorships, Nguyễn Văn Thiệu

  13. Southern Resistance • Viet Cong – resistance movement in South Vietnam to unite the south with the communist north • Ho Chi Minh Trail – used to supply the Viet Cong with resources to fight against the democratic gov’t in the south

Vietnam War (1955-1975) • National elections in 1956 were to select a new leader and unite Vietnam • South Vietnam’s leader refuses to hold elections, saying South Vietnam never signed the Geneva Accords and tries to crush communism • Split b/w north & south remains, starting the Vietnam War (Second Indochina War) • Split lasts until the end of the Vietnam war in 1975
