The Missionary's Role In Missions I. Going to the World II. Preaching the Gospel III. Establishing the Church
“At the most basic level, a missionary is someone who has been sent. That’s what the word ‘mission’ entails. It may not appear in your English Bibles, but it’s still a biblical word.” -Kevin DeYoung
Apostello Mitto/Missio Missions “To Send”
Mission Missions
Acts 13:1-3 “In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.
Acts 13:1-3 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
A Missionary • Has been faithful to serve in the local church • Actively seeks God’s direction for His next steps in ministry • Is willing to set aside all else, to be sent to a different people, place and culture so that Jesus may be made known • At God’s leading goes and takes on the role of missionary
Paul’s Example Sent By the Church Acts 15:40-41 “But Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.”
Paul’s Example Serving With Partners Acts 16:1 “He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek.”
Paul’s Example Led By the Holy Spirit Acts 16:6-10 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.
Paul’s Example Led By the Holy Spirit Acts 16:6-10 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Paul’s Example Reaching new Territory Acts 16:12 “From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.”
Paul’s Example Suffering For Christ Acts 16:22-23 “The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.”
Paul’s Example Bringing the Gospel Acts 16:30-31 “He then brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.’ ”
Paul’s Example Rooted In Scripture Acts 17:2 “As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.”
Paul’s Example • Sent by the Church • Serving with partners • Led by the Holy Spirit • Reaching new territory • Suffering for Christ • Bringing the gospel • Rooted in Scripture
The Missionary's Role In Missions I. Going to the World II. Preaching the Gospel III. Establishing the Church
Romans 1:9 “God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you.”
Romans 1:16 “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”
1 Timothy 4:13 “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.”
2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the Word”
2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the Word; Be prepared in season and out of season.”
2 Timothy 2:8-9 “This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained.”
The Missionary's Role In Missions I. Going to the World II. Preaching the Gospel III. Establishing the Church
Acts 14:23 “Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.”
Acts 20:28 “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”
1 Timothy 3:14-15 “Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”
Titus 1:5 “The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.”
The Pattern of the Apostles • Go into all the world • Preach the gospel and make disciples • Establish the local church for the nurture of the disciples
“The work of discipleship and church planting cannot take place unless some non-believers have been evangelized and some have been converted. At the same time, we cannot leave new converts on their own once they come to Christ. They must be grounded in the faith and taught what it means to turn from sin, flesh and the devil and follow Jesus.
And if our missionary work only focuses on evangelism and discipleship, without a vision for the centrality of the local church, we are not being faithful to the pattern we see in Acts.” -Kevin DeYoung
Paul Wrote to the Churches • Rome • Corinth • Galatia • Ephesus • Philippi • Colosse • Thessalonica • Timothy in Ephesus • Titus in Crete
Philippians 4:9 “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”
Those serving as missionaries should consider whether Paul's priorities are their priorities
The Pleasure of World Missions Is the Joy of Entering Into the Work of Jesus Christ 1 Thessalonians 3:8-9 “For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?”
The Sorrow of World Missions Is the Suffering of Entering Into the Work of Jesus Christ Philippians 3:10-11 “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”
