What is beat? • The Beat Generation was a group of post WWII writers that became popular in the 1950s • The topics in beat were mainly, drug experimentation, alternative sexualities, eastern religion, rejection of materialism and the human condition • The main characters surrounding beat were, Allan Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs
What is beat? • The writers in Beat were known as new bohemian hedonists • In the 1960s the Beat movement evolved into the Hippie and Counterculture movements • Fun Fact: The Beatles were inspired by the Beat movement, hence the BEAT in Beatles.
Allen Ginsberg • Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3rd, 1926 • Died on April 5th, 1997 at the age of 70 due to liver cancer and heppatitis • He was against militarism, materialism and sexual repression • His most famous work is an epic poem named ``Howl`` which centres around capitalism and conformity in America
Howl was on trial due to the sodomy laws in the United-States at the time • Howl described his homosexual relationships including those with his lifetime partner Peter Orlovsky • In court the judge ruled the poem to not be obscene
William s. Burroughs • Williams Seward Burroughs II was born on February 5th, 1914 • He died on August 2nd 1997 at the age of 83 due to a heart attack • He was a novelist, short story writer, essay writer and painter • Burroughs was born into a wealthy family and attended Harvard where he studied English and anthropology
