Romeo and Juliet Act II, Scene ii

But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,Who is already sick and pale with grief These lines mean that Romeo is comparing Juliet to the sun. Juliet is the sun that brightens any darkness. The moon should be envious of her beauty. These are metaphors.

O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?Deny thy father and refuse thy name;Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,And I'll no longer be a Capulet. Juliet wonders why Romeo must be a Montague. She says she will love him if he disowns his family or that she will disown her family if he asks her to.
3. What does Juliet mean by the following lines? What's in a name? that which we call a roseBy any other name would smell as sweet; The features of a rose and Romeo would still be the same if they had different names. A name doesn’t make a person or his/her characteristics.
4. Under what conditions will Juliet meet Romeo the next day? They will meet at 9 a.m. if Romeo is being true and honest, and if he intends to marry her.

1. Where does Friar Lawrence think Romeo has been? He thinks Romeo spent the night with Rosaline.
2. What does Romeo want Friar Lawrence to do? Romeo wants Friar Lawrence to marry Romeo and Juliet (perform the ceremony).
3. Why is Friar Lawrence shocked by Romeo’s statements? He can’t believe Romeo (who has professed to loving Rosaline with his whole heart) has forgotten Rosaline and loves another woman.
4. What does Friar Lawrence think a marriage between Romeo and Juliet might accomplish? He thinks a marriage might convince the families to be friends and stop fighting.
Romeo and Juliet Act II, Scene iv
1. What did Tybalt send to Romeo? Tybalt sent Romeo a letter challenging him to a fight.
2. How does Mercutio say Romeo is already dead? He is “dead” because he is acting too womanly to fight. Romeo’s love overpowers his ability to fight or be a man.

2. How does Friar Lawrence advise Romeo to love Juliet? Do you think this is possible? Why or why not? Friar Lawrence tells Romeo to love moderately (in between a lot and a little).
3. What makes Romeo and Juliet’s love so powerful? Why is that also a problem? Their love is so powerful because it occurs over so little time and because they are so passionate. This is a problem because they don’t take time to think through what might happen.
