Food should be simple, and the ingredients listed should be easily sourced and easy to understand. There are companies that produce simple food, and one of their most simplistic is rice paper. Rice paper originates from East Asia, it is used as a base for many different recipes because of its versatility and simplicity. Rice paper is surprisingly not made from rice, but it is made from the rice paper plant. The story of how the plant got its name is quite interesting. In the early 20th Century, rice paper was originally used as the canvas for traditional Chinese paintings. They were used because the
rice paper was so thing and it created a pure white canvas. The paintings became popular in Europe and it was not uncommon for them to be seen in homes. The Europeans around this time assumed that the paper that was used, was made from rice; Thus, resulting in the brilliant name of rice paper. The paper is used in many different recipes across the Asian culture. One that is more popular is the spring roll. The spring roll consists of the paper, as well as a variety of vegetables, occasionally shrimp, and often rice noodles. The spring roll can be made by manipulating the consistency of the paper, by placing it in warm water and making it mold able. Once it is ready, the paper can be laid down on a clean flat surface. The next step is adding in your desired vegetables, noodles, or protein base. Once said ingredients have been added, the last step is to roll the paper over the ingredients and continue to roll them like a burrito. Just like that you have a spring roll! This is just one of the many recipes that can be used with the paper, and it is so simple and healthy! With the paper only being around 20 calories per paper, it is almost too good to be true. Rice paper is simple to use, effortless to make, and easy to consume and can be an addition to anyone’s diet. Other easy recipes that it can be used in include, traditional Viet salad, fried rice, lemper (a traditional Indonesian snack), and so many other yummy things.
