  1. Reflections on Using Power Point and Voice over PowerPoint: LMS This has been adapted from work of

  2. Content • Reflection on technology use • Issues and strengths • Using the linking capacity to create a simple LMS • Introducing JING • Linking to a u tube channel to support “how to” • Behaviour management

  3. Context The Big question for any Technology ? Does the technology support the pedagogy? • Key issues: • Does it engage? • Does it promote understanding ? • Does it support your broader objectives?

  4. Some Issues One dimensional learning experience Limited engagement opportunity for students Teacher makes decisions selects and presents. Students passive. Note taking skills are different to those learnt from primary school. Interweaving and lesson start.

  5. Why invest Time in PPT The discipline of Noticing: John Mason (2002) My noticing: • VET students • Promote reading of texts students used in maths and science • Web based ppt did not seem to work • Develop visual literacies • I wanted to ensure that lessons encouraged student reading and rather than the opposite. • University was using this as a general mode of lecture delivery. What new note –taking skills were required?

  6. Examples of Reading Supportand starting lesson • Read Page 53 of text • Look at Fig 2.5.1 on text Page 53 – The person is pushing the wheels backwards to move forwards. • Can you think of some other situations where you have to push backwards in order to go forwards? Thanks Maree

  7. Using text images to deconstruct using shape inserts • A weapon moves backwards after it shoots its ammunition. • The pushing of the ammunition out is the action, • The weapon moving backwards is the reaction. Action Reaction

  8. Opportunities to support Pedagogy Focus: Mathematics Presentations have a visual impact. Visual stimulus for classes can assist with contextualising.

  9. Opportunities to support Pedagogy Using Animations Facility • Supports: • Use of Socratic questioning • Model the thinking processes • Well prepared it structures your own lesson to increase efficiency of the knowledge component the ‘chalk and talk’ • Advantage over text: • In text book all steps are revealed

  10. Finding the Marked Price The wholesale price (cost) of a DVDNIDEO/STERO is$832. The owner of the store has a fixed profit margin of 35%. What would be the marked price in the store for this item? Marked price = CP + %profit x CP = 832 + .35 X 832 = $1123.20 OR Note MP = (100% + 35%)x CP = 135% x 832 = $1123.20

  11. Use of Cover up and Reveal Cover pasted text with shapes of background and remove them

  12. Problems The scale in the figure at right indicates latitude. Find distances (a) XY and (b) XZ.

  13. Use of Cover up and Reveal Use of transparent shapes

  14. Question 18 Plateau Great variation indicates instability Lower plateau Perceiving Patterns

  15. Question 17 At one point during the trials the subject thought to herself; ‘I seem to have been getting worse instead of better’. Note : look for a big drop that might express frustration Analysing

  16. Opportunities to support Pedagogy LMS Hyperlinkingcapacity within PPT. Hyperlink to web to add detail to lesson Hyperlink to own utube channel. Really useful for capturing calculator processes using screen capture School Badge: ownership Models presentation at tertiary level

  17. Class room management Opportunities Teacher can be anywhere in the room You can use your position in the room to effect.eg, behaviour management Check work simultaneously Motivate individuals

  18. Opportunities to support Pedagogy Preview: Tools like Moodle enable you show which students have opened document Students can view your presentation before a lesson . Students can review a presentation you showed in class. Students can view your presentation outside of class.

  19. Issues with Preview and Review Without voice the slides lose most of their impact. Most of the structure of the lesson is communicated through the teachers comment. Voice also carries additional information and further stimulus. For example to verbally direct students to a worksheet seems more effective then it being read in a slide

  20. Using Voice

  21. Using Voice Using Jing to record

  22. Summary Useful Ideas: • Team up with another staff member to work and review ppt • Get a screen save program ( Jing is free) • Start you own utube channel

  23. The End
