NED ESAC Gijs de Rijk (CERN) 4 November 2008
NED • The basic idea was to build a 12 T-15 T Fresca2 magnet • The funding obtained was very limited and the program was reduced • The final program was centered around conductor development, thermal studies, design studies and insulation development. • At the end of the program a “NED1.5” Short Model Coil program was started with some partners CEA, RAL, CERN and LBNL
After NED • The FP6-CARE-NED program will be succeeded by a FP7-EUCARD-HFM program which: • Will build a 13 T 100 mm aperture Fresca2 magnet + support studies + HTS link + HTS insert coil to approach 20 T + Helical Undulator (ILC positron source)
ESAC meeting 24 March 2004: conclusions • Collaborating: … The NED program is quite complementary to other R&D programs on high-field accelerator magnets, in particular the high-field magnet R&D programs in the U.S. National Laboratories and the U.S. LHC Accelerator Research Program (US LARP). All aim at development of Nb3Sn magnets for high energy physics applications, but with different emphases. The US LARP magnet R&D program has as its first priority the development of a quadrupole for a luminosity upgrade of the LHC, which nicely complements the NED development of a dipole…. • Conductor Spec: … The wire and cable specifications seem to the Committee to be somewhat restrictive, particularly since the magnet design is still preliminary. It may make sense to give a range of specifications and leave the vendors some freedom to propose the best technical solution. The initial focus, clearly, should be on the key parameters of Jc and Deff, and one might be a bit more relaxed about other parameters for the time being. To the extent possible, this work should build on conductor development done elsewhere, recognizing, however, the restrictions that may arise since the main work is done in private companies…
ESAC meeting 24 March 2004 • Conductor characterization: The ESAC recommends that the standardization of procedures should be done on a world-wide basis, not just within European HEP; i.e. the standards defined for the NED program should be developed together with the U.S. and Japanese Nb3Sn accelerator magnet R&D programs and with the fusion programs in Europe, Japan and the U.S. The associated CARE Networking Activity on Accelerator Magnet Technology, which includes non-European participants, is one vehicle for coordinating the development of standards. The Committee notes that in the framework of ITER program, an action is running in Europe to improve the understanding of bending strain in Nb3Sn conductor and this may be a fruitful area of potential collaboration
ESAC meeting 24 March 2004 • Magnet design: In launching this effort, the group needs to be clear on the overall goals, specifically what type of magnet is to be made. Is it to be an accelerator quality magnet, or just “accelerator like”? How many features required for use in a dipole-first IR for LHC must be included? What are the field quality requirements? The ESAC believes that the goal of providing 15 T in a large bore and eventually in a long coil is already very challenging without worrying too much about other factors required for use in an accelerator, and that it would be best to focus on the more relaxed (relatively speaking) requirements for the cable test facility upgrade for the first model. In view of the evolution of the overall NED program and the recent reactivation of this work package, it may be wise to review some of the milestones to improve consistency.
NED “as funded” • Work Package 1: Management and Communication (M&C) oversees and coordinates the work of all work packages, organizes Steering Committee meetings, ensures proper reviewing and reporting as well as dissemination of knowledge within the NED JRA and the CARE project. • Work Package 2: Thermal Studies and Quench Protection (TSQP) includes measurements of heat transfer through Nb3Sn conductor insulation and quench protection computations. • Work Package 3 Conductor Development (CD) encompasses Nb3Sn conductor development and characterization. • Work Package 4: Insulation Development and Instrumentation (IDI) includes implementation studies of various types of conductor insulation which are applied in the cable characterization experiments in WP3.
