  1. CDF Silicon Workshop 2006 12th May 2006 New BLM & BLM electronics Jose E. Garcia, Jennifer Gimmell, Ulrich Husemann

  2. Outline • New BLM System • Motivation (why do we need an upgrade) • Characteristics (electronics, …) • Current Status • Installation plans • Commissioning Plans (software, firmware, ACNET interface) • Summary • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 2

  3. Motivation • Tevatron project to improve ABORT system Prevent against this Long reaction time • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 3

  4. Motivation • CDF BLM Upgrade • Add more information to the old system which is working reliably • Use same well-understood type of detectors with enhanced capabilities (new electronics) • Maybe an intermediate step towards a diamond-based beam abort system • Goals: • Shutdown:install new BLMs and all cables • After shutdown:commissioning • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 4

  5. System Overview • Integrate BLM current and digitize at Tevatron turn frequency (every 21 s) • Form three running sums for additional integration periods • Programmable time constants • One abort threshold per integration period of each channel • Possibility to change abort thresholds and masks in response to machine status • Read-out using VME system and Ethernet • VME CPU can be used for system computations • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 5

  6. System Characteristics BLM Electronics High Voltage Power Supply Timing Card Synchronous integration clock digitizers BLM BLM Digitizer Card 4 Channels with integrator and ADC FPGA Compares readings and sums to programmed thresholds - i.e. 1ms, 10ms, 1s VME / ACNET BLM Abort Card FPGA info from digitizers compared with abort masks and produce abort signals BLM Controller Card Interface to VME crate • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 6

  7. Current Status • Picked up 5 new BLMs from Marv Olson of AD Instrumentation Department (4 to be installed, 1 spare) • BLMs are tested by AD, gain: 10 C/Gy • Old fixtures removed from collision hall • New fixtures finished in April 2006: add-on to old fixtures • Cables ready for the installation BLM BLMs • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 7

  8. Installation Plans Shutdown project Richard Tesarek • Sharing crate with diamonds (first-floor counting room 1RR04D) • Installation of new BLM System • BLMs and cables set-up New Modules already requested • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 8

  9. Commissioning Plans • Initial phase of testing correct read-out – immediately after installation • Check that the dose rate and integrated dose agree for old and new system. • Set up the abort logic of the new system such that the limit is reached during a regular store. Check if the radiation levels for an abort agree –immediately after accelerator start-up • Run the system with same limits and for an abort. Check if both systems have fired and compare their FIFO contents. • Keep new BLM as back-up system up to reliability is completely proved – depending on how much chances do we have to test it • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 9

  10. Before Commissioning Some infrastructure is needed : • Establish a integration of radiation (1 minute, full store) out of the built-in rolling sums • ACNET Controls for BLMs • Adapt actual settings in ACNET (E2 page) for new BLMs (next week) • Use similar set-up: • Global reset • Current rate and integrated dose • FIFO controls • Paul Derwent will help us in the integration Use New Java Front-End • Development of mechanisms for abort acknowledgment - equivalent to current Kludge card. • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 10

  11. Summary • We will have our slot in the following weeks • Material and BLMs are ready for installation • Commissioning • Read-out system: VME modules and ACNET controls will be set-up during next week • Prepare system for radiation level tests at the beam startup • New system working as backup for a test period Unfortunately, I was not able to join you there. Finally after some troubles I have my visa. Enjoy the weekend!!! • J.E.Garcia – CDF Silicon Workshop – Santa Barbara 11
