The Australian Curriculum describes the learning entitlement for ALL students. • The purpose of engaging with and implementing Australian Curriculum is to realise the goals of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. • Goal 1: Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence • Goal 2:All young Australians become: • successful learners • confident and creative individuals • active and informed citizens
The Australian Curriculum is made up of the equally important elements: • Learning areas • General capabilities • Cross-curriculum priorities • Achievement standards.
“21st century learning does not fit neatly into a curriculum solely organised by learning areas or subjects. • The Australian Curriculum has identified a comprehensive set of skills, behaviours and dispositions or general capabilities that will assist students in living and working successfully in an increasingly complex, information-rich, globalised world.”
Step 1 • Paper resources to support site leaders / teachers • Learning area content • Backwards planning model • What do I want them to learn? (content) • How will I know they got it? (assessment) • What will I do to get there? (learning tasks) • Step 2: Going deeper-Knowledge, understanding and inclusion of the seven general capabilities • Essential tools for learning: literacy, numeracy, critical and creative thinking, information and communication technology competence • Ways of acting, behaving or learning to live with others: • ethical behaviour, personal and social competence and intercultural understanding. • Next Steps: Focus on Cross Curriculum Priorities.Further development of assessment, quality teaching etc

Assessment of Learning Assessment for Learning • The primary purpose of all assessment is to improve student learning. • Assessment is the process of: • Gathering information from a variety of sources • Providing students with descriptive feedback for future development • Assessment should allow you to pinpoint what a student can do, cannot do yet and the next steps for learning. • This information should be shared with students in a timely fashion (feedback)
