Safety and Quality • Improving patient safety. • Maintaining good quality prescribing. • Monitoring and implementing the Royal College of General Practitioners’ (RCGP) indicators that are rated as valid for assessing the prescribing safety of individual GPs • In the first year the team would prioritise those indicators relating to cardiovascular and respiratory disease and those relating to musculoskeletal

What can Community Pharmacists do to support this strategy? • Out of stock medicines – clear communication to practices regarding the nature of the problem and possibly suggestion suitable alternatives • Specials/Unlicensed medicines – information to prescribers regarding the costs of these products and suggest provision of licensed alternatives if they exist
What can Community Pharmacists do to support this strategy? Ensure that patients only receive the medicines that they require. This is an issue for all CCGs and can lead to issues with • Safety – patients taking medicines they no longer require • Waste – poor use of resources and issues regarding disposal of excess • Financial balance – Less financial resource could lead to a reduction in services to patients and fewer resources available for contractors and providers
