Ottoman Empire • System of Government • Sultans-”overlord” or “one with power” • Local officials appointed by the sultan • Law code for criminal and civil actions • Military administration • Conquered people • Acted wisely • Often improved their lives • People of other religions were allowed to practice and follow its religious laws and practices. Had a head person who reported to the sultan. • Religion • Islam

Ottoman Empire • Economy • Most Muslims served in the army & make contributions • Non-Muslims did not serve but had to pay for their exemption with a small tax. • Commercial and industrial centers • Trading • Crossroads of trade between East and West • Taxes on almost every transaction • Controlled spice route forced many places to find new trade routes.
