Why Energy Management at the Network ITServicesand TechnologiesIP Based Building Services and TechnologiesNon-IP High-Speed Internet Lighting Wireless Elevators VPN 24/7 Monitoring IP Telephony HVAC Sensors The Network Isthe Platform Audio & Video Conferencing Fire Visitor Management Video Surveillance Interactive Media Access Digital Signage Energy • Network is the common aggregation point and hence best suited to manage power on attached devices. • Network abstracts a lot of specifics of the end point from the user.
Smart Grid Cisco EnergyWise • Network based Energy solution from Cisco • EnergyWise is a technology on foundation products (switches and routers) • EnergyWise extends to non foundation products (PCs, building controls, etc…) • With 3rd Party Partners, Cisco can offer centralized monitoring, auditing and control of network attached devices • EnergyWise enables the network as a platform for energy command and control • EnergyWise is part of Cisco’s Green solution
80-100W EnergyWise - Vision • Allow the network to be the command and control plane for power management • Use Network to provide power aggregation • Provide non-disruptive power savings. • Provide secure, reliable energy management • Enhance partner eco-system to manage all customer end points. • Realize network effect to provide services like location, presence for energy management. 3-12W 18W 13W 30-50W Close to 3000 Watts attached to a 48 port switch from IT alone (PCs and Phones)
EnergyWise – Concepts Overview Query Request Query Response Query Response : 40 Watts Query: What is the power consumed by all the phones? Cisco EnergyWise Management Station Parent Neighbors Members : Entities that can also propagate EnergyWise messages across the domain. Domain : Logical grouping of EnergyWise entities (members & endpoints) Child EnergyWise Attribute: Help provide business context to devices. EndPoints: Entities that are Power consumers in the EnergyWise Domain

EnergyWise Endpoints EnergyWise Endpoints • EnergyWise Endpoints are power consumers in an EnergyWise network. • Phones,PCs,HVAC etc.. • Endpoints exhibit parent-child relationships. Example • IP Phone(child) attached to a PoE switch (parent) • Endpoints could also report data on its components. Example • PDU and its attached devices. • EnergyWise Endpoints and its components have tags (attributes assigned) • Name, Role, Keywords, Importance Lighting IP Phones* Wireless Access Points* Access Control HVAC IP Cameras* Elevator Desktops* Laptops* Fire Physical Security PDUs* * - Available Today
EnergyWise Domain • An EnergyWise domain is a logical grouping of EnergyWise entities • Each EnergyWise entity belongs to one domain • Creating the EnergyWise domain is the first step to enabling EnergyWise on a switch/router. EnergyWise Domain Wireless Controller AP End Points Wireless Client
EnergyWise Domain boundariesDomain can follow the power meter Domain B Domain A Domain D Domain C
EnergyWise Domains - Scope and Need • Domains can be mapped to the metering / sub-metering in the building for breaking down consumption to granular levels. • A building could have multiple domains. • EnergyWise domains are logical boundaries to contain EnergyWise messages. • EnergyWise domains simplify the management of an EnergyWise enabled network
EnergyWise Domain distributions Large Campus Building Mid-Size Branch Office 1 or more meters or sub meters 1 or more EnergyWise Domains Many meters or sub-meters Multiple EnergyWise Domains Small Branch Office 1 sub-meter 1 Domain
EnergyWise Members • EnergyWise members have the ability to propagate EnergyWise messages. • Some energywise members can share a neighbor relationship. • Neighbor relationships apply only to members that can share energywise messages with each other. • Typically, the switches and routers become neighbors. • Any EnergyWise query message is forwarded only to energywise neighbors. Domain Wireless Controller neighbors AP Building controller End Points Wireless Client
EnergyWise Neighbor Discovery • Neighbor relationships are automatically discovered through CDP or UDP based handshakes • This leads to the population of a neighbor table on every member. Distribution A Distribution B CDP Handshake CDP EnergyWise UDP Handshake UDP EnergyWise Access A Access B Access C • Alternatively, a user can set static neighbors if the entity is not reachable via CDPor UDP
EnergyWise Levels • An EnergyWise Power Level indicates the power state of an endpoint • For example Level 2-3 for PC => Standby • The EnergyWise power management application/CLI can tell devices to enter power states using a EnergyWise power level set command • For example set level 3 • The endpoint can also communicate its power level back to the network
Cisco EnergyWise Importance Cisco EnergyWise Orchestrator • An attribute used to establish relative business priorities between devices • It has a numerical range from 1 – 100 (100 being highest value) • For example: • An office phone has lower importance as compared to an emergency phone LMS IBM Tivoli Management API SNMP TCP Domain Wireless Controller Importance 90 AP Building controller End Points Importance 40 Wireless Client CEO’s Phone Importance 70
Cisco EnergyWise Attributes Provide additional description for your entities Cisco EnergyWise Orchestrator • Keyword – a multi-valued attribute used to provide additional context to a device. Context could include location, user etc. • Eg:IT, floor2, cube1 • Role – An attribute used to help define device function. LMS IBM Tivoli Management API SNMP TCP Domain Wireless Controller Keyword:IT,floor1,LabA Role: Distribution_switch AP Building controller End Points Wireless Client Keyword: IT,floor2,cube2 Role :OperatorPC Keyword:IT,floor2,cube1 Role: Lobby_Phone
EnergyWise Queries and ReportingPerform domain wide monitoring and control • Possible Query Actions • Set : Change power levels of devices using EnergyWise Query. • Sum : Get the aggregated power consumption of all the devices searched. • Collect : Get a listing of individual power consumptions of all the devices searched. EnergyWise Management Station Query : What is the power consumed by the domain bldg19 ? Response: 596 Watts 300 W 300 W In the domain Not in the domain 100 W 100 W 100 W Bldg 18 Bldg 19 7 W 15 W 15 W 60 W 7 W 7 W 7 W 7 W
EnergyWise Query Language EnergyWise queries are a powerful paradigm that enhance the ability of the switch to gather data across an entire domain from any switch in the domain. An EnergyWise query is structured similar to an SQL query. An SQL Query picks up static data from the database, an EnergyWise query picks up dynamic data from a distributed environment Question : Whats the power consumed by building X? SQL Query : Select sum(usage) from MyDomain where importance <= 100 and name = Bldgx; EnergyWise Query: Question : Whats the power consumed by building X? Switch# energywise query importance 100 name Bldgx sum usage
EnergyWise Recurrences • Native to EnergyWise is the ability to raise queries based on time of day. • They are generated automatically in the switch by using the switch clock to trigger queries. • In CLI, recurrences can be set on a per port basis or using the time range command • Time based queries are fundamental to setting usage policies Branch Turn off all devices with importance < 50 at 6:00 PM Branch Importance=70 Shut < 50 EnergyWiseManagementApplication Importance=40 EnergyWise-Enabled
EnergyWise Security • Requirement : Prevent unauthorized communication in the EnergyWise Network.
