  2. Learning Intentions Today you will be able to… • Decide as part of a group which part of WW1 you will study. • Identify new weapons used in World War1. • Select four weapons and explain their use. • Explainwhich of the weapons you have studied was most effective.

  3. What are you going to do? • You are going to make up a power point with other members of your group. • You will be given two choices: The Home Front During WW1 New Technology during WW1 • In your power point you can use information from a range of sources: books, Websites, TV programmes, DVDs etc. • In order to pass this part of your course you and your group must present your power point or a part of it to the rest of the class.

  4. Slide 2: Introduction • What was the ‘Western Front’ • Include a general description of a trench, focus on how it protected soldiers • What was meant by a stalemate in trench warfare? • Explain what you will include in your Power Point about how both sides tried to break the stalemate.

  5. Slide 3 Attacking a Trench • What was the usual method of attacking a trench? • How successful was this method? • Give an example of a trench battle that involved Scottish soldiers? – use a primary source to give examples of what happened.

  6. Slide 4 –New Weapons • Make a list of as many new or improved weapons used in WW1 • Try to say when they were introduced? • Why were they introduced – what did both sides hope for?

Slide 5 – You Choose • On the next slides you will pick four of these weapons. • Describe them in action, you could quote from a source, use a website, watch a DVD etc. • Supply a photograph to show the weapon in use – this will be a primary source. • Say what their strengths (good points)are • Say what their weaknesses(bad points) are.

Slide 10 – Your Conclusion Now you must sum up your information • Which of your weapons was the most effective against the enemy? • You must say why this weapon worked so well. • Compare your weapon to any other used to attack a trench and say why it was an improvement, can you give any evidence to back this up e.g. the name of a battle or quote from a source?

Success Criteria • I was able to work as part of a group to decide which part of WW1 we would study. • I identified a number of new weapons used in World War1. • I selectedfour weapons and explained their strengths & weaknesses. • I could compare different new weapons used in WW1 • I explainedwhich of the weapons that my group studied was most effective and gave a reason why.
