Physical Science Vocabulary Week22
1) amplitude • For a transverse wave, one half the distance between a crest and a trough
2) wavelength • For a transverse wave, the distance between the tops of two adjacent crests or the bottoms of two adjacent troughs; for a compressional wave, the distance from the centers of adjacent rarefaction or adjacent compressions.
3) frequency • Number of wavelengths that pass a given point in one second; measured in hertz (Hz).
4) reflection • Occurs when a wave strikes an object or surface and bounces off.
5) refraction • Bending of a wave as it moves from one medium into another medium.
6) diffraction • Bending of waves around a barrier.
7) interference • Occurs when two or more waves combine and form a new wave when they overlap.
8) echo • A reflected sound wave.
9) period • Refers to the amount of time it takes for a wave to complete one full cycle.
10) Wave speed • The speed at which a wave travels.
