Tyler Daley and Bryan Parrish Race and Ethnicity
Thesis • To discuss and provide an in-depth explanation of race and ethnicity
Race • “Race is the categorization of parts of a population based on physical appearance due to particular historical social and political forces” • Sociologically: Defined by appearance • No clear standards for determining a race
Race • Racial categories differ between societies and different nations
Ethnicity • Having distinct cultural characteristics • Sub-cultural group of a multicultural society • Culture is taught and passed down from generation to generation (can change over time)
What is the Difference? • Many people use race and ethnicity inter-changeably • There are difficulties in measurement
U.S. Census • Persuades people to choose an ethnicity • People choose by primary race and self identification http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29Z5i3oR4Z4
Theories of Prejudice • Scapegoat / Frustration- an individual or group unfairly blamed for someone else's troubles • Authoritarian personality- people who are prejudiced that have a high rating position
Discrimination and Segregation • Discrimination- unfair treatment directed at an individual or group • Types: • Individual • Institutional
Stereotypes • Negative stereotypes • Lazy groups • Crime • Positive stereotypes • Wealth • Job / career
Relating Prejudice and Stereotypes • Genocide- an attempted annihilation of a people based on their race or ethnicity
Population Transfer • Direct- ethnic cleansing; forcing people to flee in fear (ex. Relocating Native Americans on to reservations) • Indirect- making life so unbearable they voluntarily leave
Conclusion • Race and Ethnicity allow people to be an individual • U.S. is a melting pot • We encourage everyone to accept our differences
