  2. The Early Year’s • Born on February 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Getz was a gifted boy, both in academics and music. His love for music focused his attention to the Saxophone. Getz learned to play the instrument quickly at the young age of thirteen.

  3. 1943, age 16 • Getz joined Jack Teagarden’s band at the age of sixteen. Jack Teagarden’s band played along with renowned musicians such as Nat King Cole and Lionel Hampton.

  4. Stan Getz and Woody Herman Woody Herman, American Jazz Clarinetist. “The Second Herd” Getz joined the The Second Herd in 1947. His career as a solo artist had begun.

  5. Stan Getz moved to Scandinavia in the mid 1950’s to explore the world of music. Stan picked up many different styles of jazz. One style in particular was “Bossa Nova”, a jazz sound mixed with Samba from Brazil.

  6. Getz returned to America bringing with him the “Bossa Nova” style to the American audience. Together with guitarist “Charlie Byrd” they recorded a hit song call Jazz Samba in 1962. Stan Getz with Charlie Byrd Best Jazz performance in 1963 for Desafinado

  7. “Desafinado” Word that means “Out of Tune” or “Off-Key” in Portuguese. This song was originally composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The version by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd gained recognition in 1963 winning a Grammy for best jazz performance.

  8. “The Girl from Ipanema” This famous song was inspired by this beautiful, young woman in the city of Ipanema, Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The original composers watched the girl pass by the bar every day, which inspired the writing of the song.

  9. Stan Getz, Sax. Joao Gilberto, guitar, and Astrud Gilberto, vocals. Perform their rendition of the “Girl from Ipanema”, which won a Grammy for record of the year in 1965. Astrud Gilberto had never sang professioanlly before the recording of this song.

  10. Later Year’s • Stan Getz married Beverly Byrne in 1946 , Beverly was a vocalist with Gene Krupa’s band. Together they had three children. Stan and Beverly battled drug and alcohol addictions throughout their life and were both later arrested for an attempted robbery. Getz, wanting desperately to escape his drug addictions, moved to Denmark and married Monica Silfverskiold, fathering two more children. • Beverly Byrne

  11. Stan Getz died of liver cancer on June 6, 1991.Getz the Saxophone player, best known as “The Sound” because of the lyrical tone that came out of his instrument is one of the greatest Saxaphone players of his time.
