Eligibility • Must have either completed or be in final year of Bachelor or Honours degree • Must have a current GAMSAT score • Scores from 2013 or 2014 may be used • Can use score from GAMSAT UK 2013 • International applicants must apply directly to university of their choice • May use MCAT (USA and Canada) or GAMSAT score for entry
Admission based on • Performance in GAMSAT • Performance in the qualifying degree (as indicated by GPA) calculations; • Performance in interview (except The University of Queensland); • Performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or autobiographical statement.
Types of Places • Commonwealth-Supported Places (CSP). • These places are standard Commonwealth supported (formerly HECS) places and do not carry any additional restrictions or obligations. • Bonded Medical Places (BMP) • 25% of Commonwealth supported places must be set aside as Bonded Medical Places. • Require you to (at the end of your training) practice in a designated area of need. An area of need is a district of workforce shortage as defined by the Commonwealth Government (and not necessarily in a rural location). • Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Places (MRBS) • The scholarship amount is $23,686 (in 2010) and is indexed annually, tax free, not subject to a means test and received yearly for as long as it normally takes to complete the medical degree. • Students agree to practice in rural or remote areas of Australia for six continuous years upon completion of basic medical and vocational training as a specialist (including general practice). • The scholarship is formalised in a contract between successful applicants and the Commonwealth Government and there are penalties for breaking the contract strip you of Medicare provider licence. • Full-Fee Places • Exactly what it sounds like. Only a few unis offer these for domestic students.
Choosing Preferences • 6 Preferences – candidates are matched to the highest ranked university for which they are competitive for • Rank within each preference, type of place preference. • If you are below the minimum criteria for a certain university you will not be considered for an interview or a place • Most Unis have minimum entry criteria e.g. 5.00 GPA, GAMSAT score of 50 in each section • NOTE: If you interview at #3, you can only be considered for preferences 3-6, not 1-2 • Choosing a university, what qualities are you after? • Large vs. small cohort • Rural vs. metropolitan focus • Victoria vs. interstate • Admission GAMSAT or GPA weighted? • Defer place?
Where to apply? Use your strengths • ANU, Deakin, Melbourne Uniand UWA Combination GPA and GAMSAT when ranking applicants for interview. (GPA/7 + GAMSAT/100) • Monash University and UsydGPA as a hurdle requirement (5.0) and ranks applicants based on GAMSAT results. • Griffith University ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from a 50/50 combination of an unweighted GPA and the overall GAMSAT score. • The University of Queensland Hurdle GPA then ranks applicants by GAMSAT results (using the GPA as a tie-breaker where necessary) • Flinders University ranks applicants primarily on the basis of GAMSAT results, although applicants with outstanding GPAs may be given special consideration. • The University of Wollongong, The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Fremantle) and The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Sydney) rank applicants on combined GPA, GAMSAT results and portfolio/written submission.
Rural Areas • Schools have a variety of sub-quotas and places reserved for applicants from indigenous applicants and applicants with a rural background, or who are from a specific local area. • If you have lived in a rural area (ASGC-RA 2 to 5) for 5 years either consecutively or cumulatively since the start of primary school you may be eligible for consideration in rural schemes and subquotas.
Special considerations Deakin • Applicants from ASGC-RA 2 areas or those living in Geelong receive a 2% bonus • Applicants from ASGC-RA 3-5 areas receive a 4% bonus • Applicants who can demonstrate having at least 12 months of "clinical experience" receive a 2% bonus to their combined GPA/GAMSAT score • Applicants who can demonstrate financial disadvantage during their undergraduate degree are eligible for a further 2% bonus to their combined GPA/GAMSAT score Monash • Bonus if applicant has lived in Gippsland for 5 years (consecutively or cumulatively)
Minimum scores for entry 2014 • Scores are presented as a (GPA/7)+(GAMSAT Overall/100)
Timeline • 31 May – Applications close • 3 June – USyd applications close • 11 June – Supporting documents due • Early September – Offers for interviews (and offers for admission to UQ) released • September/October – Medicine interviews held • Early November – First round offers for places released • December 2014/January 2015 – Additional offers made to fill vacancies
