  3. Definition 1. Definition and Purpose of use • EDRs is a function and device installed in a motor vehicle to record technical information about the status and operation of vehicle systems for a very brief period of time and in a very limited circumstances before and during a crash.

  4. Purpose of use 1. Definition and Purpose of use • The data recorded EDR are used to improve crash and defect investigation - To help crash investators better understand as follow. ㆍWhat happened to the vehicle ㆍHow the safety systems performed ㆍIn some case, who’s at fault

  5. 2. EDRs’ Working Procedure ① ② ③ ① EDR corrects vehicle information continously. Those information are briefly stored and constsntly replaced in a recirculating loop lasting constant short time(i.e., about 5 seconds) ② At the event the EDR captures the data before and during a crash ③ EDR data can be retrieved and analyzed to understand how the vehicle performed at the time of a crash

Data Elements Recorded • Essential 15 data elements (that must be recorded) - Vehicle speed, Engine throttle position, Brake use, Driver safety belt status, airbag warning lamp status, forward Delta-V and Airbag development time, etc. • Optional 30 data elements (if recorded) - Acceleration, lateral Delta-V, Engine RPM, Steering input, etc.

Grobal status of EDR legislation establishment • KOREA(Article 29-2 of Motor Vehicle Management Act) In December 2012, MOLIT established a legislation that set forth contents as follow ※ Applied to Vehicle(manufactured on or after December 19, 2015) equipped with EDRs less than a GVWR of 3.85 ton ▪ Making legal grounds about EDR Performance, Data Elements, EDR Data Provision and Notification of EDR installation. • Main Contents of sub-legislation ▪ Enforcement Regulation of MVMA : Making the procedure and method of EDR Data to indicated Customer/Driver ▪ KMVSS : Making Detail EDR Performance and format • USA(49 CFR Part 563) In August 2006, NHTSA established a Regulation that set forth contents same as Korea EDR Legislation ※ Applied to Vehicle(manufactured on or after September 1, 2012) equipped with EDRs less than a GVWR of 3.85 ton
