The Retrieve Protocol for Execution (RPE) streamlines clinical research participation by integrating research protocol workflow into patient care processes. RPE automates the retrieval and execution of complex research instructions within Electronic Health Records (EHRs), bridging the gap between EHRs and clinical research systems. Three key actors automate the workflow: Protocol Definition Manager, Protocol State Manager, and Protocol Executor. RPE is an early adopter of the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for formal protocol representation and execution in EHRs.

  2. Value Proposition Retrieve Protocol for Execution (RPE) will greatly simplify a healthcare site’s participation in clinical research by integrating workflow from the research protocol into the work processes of patient care.

  3. Profile Abstract RPE provides an automated mechanism for EHRs to retrieve a complex set of clinical research instructions (or a protocol) from an formally expressed research protocol to execute within the EHR.

  4. Scope RPE works in the space between the EHR and the clinical research system (EDC). Three actors participate in automating workflow: • Protocol Definition Manager • Protocol State Manager • Protocol Executor

  5. Key Technical Properties RPE is an early adoption of the workflow automation standard Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) applied to formal protocol representation and execution in an EHR.
