  2. The Actual Facts… When was he born and where?? • Howard Hathaway Aiken was born on March 8,1900 in Hoboken, New Jersey, but grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. Howard Aiken was only child.

  3. Who were his parents and wat did they do?? • Howard Aiken parents were Daniel and Margaret Emily Aiken and he was the only child.

  4. Where did he start his childhood education?? • He went to school at Arsenal Technical High school in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  5. The Unthinkable Invention… • He went back to school in 1935. While studying for a doctorate at Harvard University, Aiken got the idea of building a calculating device capable of solving certain differential equations that would have taken a very long time to compute by hand. The university helped Aiken by providing the money to buy the IBM. In 1939 the began to work on the machine, the same year Aiken earned his doctorate. His plan was to build an electrical version of a calculating machine.

  6. The Unthinkable Invention… (part 2) • Aiken's computer, called the "Mark I," was a gigantic marvel: It was 51 feet long and weighed more than 30 tons, with roughly 500 miles of wiring inside. It required several seconds to multiply two numbers. It took five years to build. When the Mark I was finally operational in 1944, there was an immediate customer for its calculating power.

  7. Today’s Society… • Howard Hathaway Aiken was widely seen as the father of the computer age. A National Science Foundation family tree of computer history labeled his Harvard Mark I as the root of all modern computers. His work helped usher in the modern era of computing, and he was perhaps the first to research computing in a university.

  8. Is he still alive?? • Howard Hathaway Aiken died March 14,1973 in St. Louis Missouri.
