Presentation of the Municipality of Kantanos - Selino • Palaiochora • The municipality of Kandanos-Selino is in the south-west side of Crete an hour away from Chania city, Greece. Its main county town is Paleochora but it also includes the areas of Koundoura and Kandanos. The number of residents in total is about 5500. • Paleochora is a seaside town, overlooking the Libyan sea. It has mild Mediterranean climate and is claimed to have the warmest temperature in the country. It is surrounded by many beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and that’s the main reason why it is said to be one of the most famous summer resorts in Greece. Every year thousands of tourists spend their holidays here so as to visit the old Venetian castle, which is of great historical significance, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the sunset it offers. Besides, our town is also known for the traditional cuisine and the organic products being used.
Kountoura • The region of the village of Kountoura is also known as AgiaKyriaki. It is located southwest of Chania and is only 7km from Paleochora. • In Kountoura the visitor will be impressed by the vast expanses with greenhouses, as the area is well known for its vegetable crops which supply not only Crete but also the rest of Greece. The agricultural cooperative of Kountoura indeed is one of the most active in Crete and its members grow mainly vegetables like tomatoes, and cucumbers, peppers and eggplants. • Near Kountoura, you will find the beautiful beach of Krios with the blue waters and beautiful pebbles on the east side of Cape Krios. It has an area of one kilometer suitable for camping, and is divided into three consecutive bays which offer isolation to tranquillity seeking visitors. There is also the Lake of Krios or Viena located on the European footpath E4, that links Paleochora with Elafonissi about 20-30 minutes from Krios beach. However, the Lake is located right in the site of the ancient city of Viena. So, you will see marble columns lying on the beach and under water. The Lake of Krios is one of the most unknown and secluded, but also amazing, beaches of Crete. .
Κandanos • The history of Kandanos • Kandanos, with 500 inhabitants, is a small village which belongs to the former municipality of Chania region and it is located 15 km away from Palaiochora’s General High School. Kandanos has a war-based history in which the citizens retaliated against the German forces, thus leading to the ‘’Razing of Kandanos’’ (3rd of June 1941). The area has many historical monuments, such as the Museum of Kandanos, the Square which is dedicated to the fallen and the Ancient Byzantine Churches.
