Introduction: The Need for a Redemption Plan God’s kingship and authority over mankind was given to Adam in the Garden of Eden but was subverted to Satan because of Adam’s disobedience. Because of this disobedience, man and God’s entire creation is said to be in a “fallen state”. It’s the state of decay that leads to death, and it’s a condition that can only be remedied by God. God regained control by becoming man, living amongst us, and living without sin. Now Christ is the ruler not just of today but also in the future.
Corruption Through Kings • “In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to arouse the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him. (1 Kings 16:29-33) Theocracy (2 Samuel-2 Kings 10): God ruling the nation through a man
Who was a more righteous king? King David or King Solomon? Neither
King David • King David: man after God’s own heart; Messiah would come from line of David. • King David’s Sin: • Adultery with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1-5) • Murder of Uriah (2 Samuel 11:14-15)
King Solomon • King Solomon: peace and prosperity in Israel during his reign; blessed with extreme wisdom. • King Solomon’s Sin • 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:1-3) • Intermarry with those who do not believe in God (1 Kings 11:4-9) • Obsessed with power and wealth Result was that Israel was plagued with depression, immorality, worshipping idols, murder, pride, but there was a cycle of repentance and restoration
The Cycle of Sin ‘Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD had compassion on them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them. But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.’ (Judges 2:18-29)
Corruption Through Mankind • “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath”. (Ephesians 2:1-3) We have all __________ God’s law and this carries with it the penalty of __________ disobeyed death We are in bondage to sin and Satan and our payment is __________ and __________ from God. We desperately need someone to redeem us otherwise we are doomed. (Rev. 20:14-15) eternal death separation
Philippians 2:1-11 2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider __________ with God something to be used to his own advantage, but made himself __________ by taking the very nature of a __________, being made in human likeness. Humbled himself by becoming __________ to __________, even death on a cross. obedient obedient death equality Therefore God __________ him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. exalted nothing servant
Colossians 1:13-20 • 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. • Rescued us from the dominion of __________ and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have __________, the forgiveness of sins. • The Son is the image of the invisible God__________ over all creation. For in him, all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. darkness redemption the firstborn
Jesus = 2nd (Last) Adam • 1 Corinthians 15:22,45 • For as in Adam ______ die, so in Christ all will be made _________. • So it is written: “the first Adam became a ______________ being”, the last Adam, ____________ spirit. all alive living life-giving
Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned---the law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:12,20-21) Adam Jesus Perfect man/one with God Innocent, sinless and holy Head of the redeemed humanity (died once for all time) Communicates life and light to all men and gives eternal life to those who believe After being raised from the dead, was elevated to God’s right hand and given dominion over all things Victorious over sin, the flesh, and the devil Obedient to death, even death on the cross Died on the cross to atone for sin but did not stay dead, on the 3rd day rose from death by overcoming the devil and power of death • Created a perfect man, have spiritual communion with God • Initially innocent, sinless and holy • Head of human race • Representing mankind, was given dominion over the created world (Gen 1:26) • Failed when tested • Disobeyed God • Experienced judgment from God, ultimately died and body turned to dust
Summary • We are all connected with the first Adam (the natural and legal head of the human race) as guilty sinners, and so are included in the death sentence. However, all who are connected with the last Adam, Jesus, through repentance and faith in His redeeming work, are forgiven, received the free gift of righteousness, and have passed from death into life. • It is only by God that the creation of God can be restored. It is only God that can restore man, and only God who can defeat death. For what man has the power to restore creation to it’s original condition? What man has the ability to remove evil from all mankind? And what man is there amongst us (or that has ever lived) is able to overcome death? There is none but Jesus, the Son of God.
