Location 1. Where was the structure built? • Halicarnassus, an ancient capital city, along the Mediterranean coast of Asia Minor. Today it is the modern city Bodrum in Turkey. 2. When was the structure built? • It was built around 350 BC. 3. What is left of the structure as it stands today? • Only the base is still there, and many remains have been found.
Purpose 1. Who built the structure • Mausolus’ queen, Artemisia, who was also his sister. 2. Why did they build this structure? • Queen Artemisia was heartbroken when Mausolus died, and as a tribute to him she built him the most splendid tomb. 3. How was this structure used? • The tomb was used as Mausolus’ resting place.
Uniqueness 1. What made the structure unique? • The decorations and statues on the outside of each level of the 140 foot tall tomb. 2. How long did it take to build the structure? • It took 2 years for it to be built. What materials or construction techniques were used to build the structure? • An oval dome structure, large masses of marble material, and a mixture of Greek, Egyptian and Lycian styles.
Ancient Foresight 1. Are there any parallels to similar structure used today? • Yes. 2. What are they? • Honoring the dead in a beautiful place, and having a structure on a hill to over look the city. 3. Is this structure one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World? • Yes.
