WHAT IS A FRACTAL? • A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. • When a fractal gets bigger, there are more details. • Incidentally, the term “fractal” was coined in 1975 by Benoit Mandelbrot, and comes from the Latin word fractus, the perfect participle passive of the verb frangere, meaning “to break, shatter, or break down”.
