  1. Title: Going Bananas for DNA Introduction: Today, we will try to extract (pull out) and observe the DNA from the cells of a banana. Like humans, banana cells are eukaryotic, meaning their cells contain a nucleus. Unlike humans, bananas are triploid, meaning they carry 3 copies of their DNA. Humans only carry 2 copies of their DNA (diploid); one set comes from mom and the other from dad. Because Bananas have more DNA, it is easier to extract it. Pre-Lab Questions: Where in the cell is the DNA or genetic information stored? a. cytoplasm b. nucleus c. vacuole d. mitochondria Which statement below is true? a. bananas are diploid, humans are triploid b. bananas are built from prokaryotic cells c. Bananas are triploid, humans are diploid d. Bananas have the same genes as humans Hypothesis: What do you think DNA will look like? (complete sentence) ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________. Observations: Sketch a picture of the DNA and write 2 sentences that describe it’s appearance and texture. Drawing Description: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________. Conclusion: answer these question on the next page in your composition book using complete sentences. Did your observations support your hypothesis? Why or Why not? 2. Do you think this investigation would work for other organisms? Why or why not? 3. Do you think the DNA you extracted is from one cell or many cells? Why?
