Talking rubbish at DGCC • DGCC have been involved in green tourism business scheme since its inception in 2003 • The last 7 years has seen radical changes in how we dispose of our waste • We joined forces with our recycling partners, TQ Recycling. With their help we have been able to further reduce landfill considerable

5. RECYCLING OUR WASTE • 2004/5 General waste to landfill was in excess of 50,000kg. • This may not sound much but when you take into consideration it equates to 50 tons. • Hard to visualise 50 tons of rubbish going to land fill, let me help you. • It is the equivalent of :-

6. TALKING RECYCLING • Over the last 4-5 years this has reduced significantly • By 2008 we had reduced our land fill by 26 tons in favour of Recycling • Working with TQ Recycling, we identified new practices for recycling waste as their technology and methods met our needs

7. RECYCLING WASTE • CARDBOARD – Compacting bails of cardboard assisted us with storage space • Collection costs were reduced • Transport costs were reduced • Disposal costs were reduced • Produced savings of £4,000 per year

8. Cardboard Recycling • Weekly collection of Cardboard 210kg per week – 10,950 tons per year

9. RECYCLING WASTE • PLASTIC – bottles are stored in bags of approximately 500 then removed for recycling • Tin/aluminium – all cans and tins from the kitchen are also bagged awaiting collection • GLASS – 14 tons of glass are recycled

10. RECYCLING WASTE STAFF BUY IN • Monthly New Letter each month contains information on recycling, reducing energy, re-use goods • Quarterly “green meeting” asking staff to record what they are doing within their departments to reduce, reuse and recycle

11. FINANCIAL BENEFITS • These practices have • Reduced electricity usage by 20%, • Gas consumption by 10%, • Water usage by 40% and a reduction in waste going to landfill of 40%. Approximate cost savings amount to £18,500 per year

12. WASTE - The Future • Continue to identify new methods and practices to further improve recycling • Look to find method of recycling food waste – guesstimated to be in excess of 4 tons per year. • Continue to educate guests, staff and members on the importance of recycling.
