Future Proofing of TETRA Networks Dr. M. Nouri New Technologies Senior Manager Chairman of EPT Working Group 4 (WG4) High Speed Data (HSD)
Summary • Initial Planning for Expansion • Feature / Software Release Plans • Upgrade to Integrated TETRA1 Plus TETRA2 TEDS (TETRA Enhanced Data Services) • Frequency Allocation Matters • Conclusions
Initial Planning for Expansion • Plan for additional switching centres • Plan for phased completion of coverage • Channel addition to base stations as traffic grows with time • Sizing of databases for the final capacity • Plan for external interfaces and their introduction time-plan • Subscriber differentiation via VPN
Feature Release Plans • Identify currently available features • Confirm the upcoming feature release plans • Commercial trade-off against future functionality • Secure a realistic timetable for feature releases • Take into account the need for the TIPS process for certain features and the time impact
What Services? What Data Speeds? • Is single slot TETRA1 sufficient • Do you require TETRA1 multislot operation now or in the near future • What are the likely speeds required for the future • Is low complexity low speed TEDS sufficient • Do you require medium or high speed TEDS in the future

TEDS Technology Parameters • Multi-carrier platform with TDMA carriers. • Adaptive selection of modulation and coding according to propagation conditions. • Agreed modulation schemes: • /4 DQPSK for common control channel • D8PSK for early migration requiring modest increase in speed • 4 QAM for efficient links at edge of coverage • 16 QAM for moderate speeds • 64 QAM for high speed • Carrier bandwidths: 25, 50, 100 and 150 kHz. • Expected user bit rates in the region of 30 to 400 kbit/s • TETRA1 higher layer protocols to be adapted for TEDS.
