The Importance of the Word of God in your Life: Understanding Hebrews 4:12
Word:λόγος (la’-gos) 1) A word. 2) The sayings of God. 3) Decree, mandate or order. 4) Of the moral precepts given by God. 5) Old Testament prophecy given by the prophets. 6) What is declared, a thought, declaration, astute observation a weighty saying, a dictum, or a maxim.
Living:ζάω(za’-o) 1) To live, breathe, be among the living. (not lifeless, not dead) 2) To enjoy real life = +H of God. 3) Active, blessed, and endless in the kingdom of God. A metaphor for full vigor. 4) To be fresh, strong, efficient.
Active:ἐνεργής(en-er-gace) 1) Active, Effectual, Energetic. 1 Corinthians 16:9, “For a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.”
Adam Clarke Commentary: “Doors often signify an occasion or opportunity; but here, the apostle may allude to the throwing open of the great doors of the Circus Maximus before the chariot races began; and the many adversaries may refer to the numerous competitors in those races.”
Sharper:τομός(to-mo’ss) 1) From the root TEMNO = a decisive cut. Unlike the word KOPTO, which means to strike with repeated blows, such as hacking, TEMNO and TOMAS have a more comprehensive and decisive action, meaning one sure stroke or slice.
Two-Edged:δίστομος (des-sto-mos) δίς(DIS) = Twice, again στόμα (STOMA) = Mouth, face, edge. A derivative of the base word TOMAS (sharper)
Sword:μάχαιρα (mak-ihera) 1) A large knife, used for killing animals and cutting up flesh. 2) A small sword, as distinguished from a large sword. A smaller sword has the advantage of speed over a large sword. The Word Of God is not only sharp and precise, it is utterly fast!
Sword:μάχαιρα(mak-ihera) Adam Clarke Commentary Heb 4:12 “By this sword the man himself lives, and by it he destroys his enemies.” The Word Of God can protect and defend you against your enemies. Ephesians 6:10-17
Piercing:διϊκνέομαι(de-ek-nay-oma) 1) To go through, penetrate, or pierce. διά(Preposition) = Through, by means of, on account of, the ground or reason by which something is or is not done. ἱκανός(Adjective) = Sufficient, many, enough, worthy. The Word of God can pierce through our mental defenses, human reasoning, false doctrine, false idols, a hard heart etc.
Dividing:μερισμός(me-re-smo’s) 1) A division, partition, distribution (of various kinds), a separation, to cleave asunder, Gifts by means of distributions Heb 2:4) Matthew 10:34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Soul:ψυχή(psu-kay) 1) Breath of life shared with humans and Animals. 2) Life, living being, a living soul. 3) The soul as an essence which differs from the body and is not dissolved by Death. Every man or woman have a soul, which is imperishable; but not all men and women have a regenerated human spirit.
Soul:ψυχή(psu-kay) Genesis 2:7 (Amp) Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath orspirit of life, and man became a living being. 1 Corinthians 15:45 So also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living soul.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
Life-Giving:ζῳοποιέω(zo-a-poi-eh-o) • To restore to spiritual life. • To give an increase of life. • Quickening in respect to the spirit; endowed with new and greater powers of life. John 6:63 Compare 1 Cor 15:45
Spirit:πνεῦμα(Nu-ma) 1) The vital principal by which the (spiritual) body is animated. 2) The disposition or influence which fills and governs the soul of any one. James 2:26 For just as the body without thespirit is dead, so also faith without (divine) works is dead.
Joints:ἁρμός (ha’ar-mos) • A joining, joint. • The movable or fixed place or part where two bones or elements of a skeleton join. Root Word (Etymology) ἅρμα(harma) A chariot drawn by horses. Typically in preparation for war.
Marrow:μυελός(mu-eh-lo’s) Marrow 1) The fatty network of connective tissue that fills the cavities of bones. 2) The vital part; essence. 3) Vitality. 4) Rich food.
Thoughts:ἐνθύμησις(en-thu-may-cease) 1) Thinking, consideration. 2) Thoughts. 3) Device - KJV Matthew 9:4 And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
Intentions:ἔννοια (annoy-ya) 1) The act of thinking, consideration, and Meditation. 2) Mind, understanding, will, manner of feeling, and thinking. Purpose. 1 Peter 4:1A Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose - (The Word Of God!)
Romans 7:14-16 (Message) I can anticipate the response that is coming: “I know that all God’s commands are spiritual, but I’m not. Isn’t this also your experience?” Yes. I’m full of myself—after all, I’ve spent a long time in sin’s prison. What I don’t understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise. So if I can’t be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God’s command is necessary.
Romans 7:17-20 (Message) But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.
Heart:καρδία(car-dia) • Mind. • The right lobe of the soul. The Word of God can differentiate, and separate (divide) the PSYCHE man, (soulish man), from the PNEUMA man! (new man)
Judge:κριτικός(kre-te-kos) 1) Relating to judging; fit for judging, skilled in judging. Quote from E.W. Bullinger’s “Numbers In Scripture - Its Supernatural Design and Spiritual Significance.” Pages 70-71 (1967)
