GEO Task AG-06-01 • Description of the Work to be Performed • Identify Task Force participants • Create tasking statement / terms of reference • Plan and conduct workshops for this task force. • Produce a 10 year Strategic Plan for Agriculture Initiate creation of a 5- to 10-year strategic plan: define specific objectives for 2007 and create a plan of action for agriculture.

Challenges in a changing world – 1985-2006 • Food production • Agricultural research • Current use of EOSA Systems e.g. SPOT, MODIS, MSG, Hi-Resolution instruments such as IKONOS & QUICKBIRD • Global MEAs and governance • Millennium Development Goals, Millennium Assessment • Issues for consideration across all sections: • Developed Countries verse Developing countries • In situ verse Satellite • National verse Global

Building for the Future – 2007-2020 • Vision towards societal benefits e.g. Food security, Poverty alleviation, Ecosystem protection & Hunger reduction • Objectives and outcomes e.g. Mapping and monitoring of changes in agricultural type and distribution • Major issues including: Land cover; Land use change; Surface water; Ground water; Crop productivity; Fire etc. • Facilitating coordination and interaction with countries • Actions required (Investment) • Building Capacity

Strengthening the Structures • Major activities: -Multiple Goods and Services e.g. Bio-Energy & water -Policy and Planning (National Uses) e.g. economic & environment -Policy and Planning (Global Uses) e.g. CBD & UNFCCC -Technology Use and Deployment e.g. Architecture & Capacity Building -Early Warning Systems • Disaster Response • Food Production (including national and sub-national agricultural statistics) • Productivity and Sustainability of Agricultural Lands
