Dominoes 8/14/13
Essential Math Concepts to Survive Physics • Solving algebraic equations • Distinguishing between quantities, variables and units • Organizing physics problems (T-Charts) • Calculating withscientific notation • Metric (time) and English conversions • Identifying and rounding significant figures
What does a domino look like? • The top of the domino is the numerator • The bottom is the denominator and • The horizontal line is one long fraction bar (division)
Steps for Dominoes • 1) In the first “domino” put in the amount and unit(s) that are going to be converted over the number 1. • NOTE: all “per” units go on the bottom (Ex. meters per second (m/s) meters goes on top and seconds goes on the bottom)
Steps for Dominoes • 2) In the following dominoes: • the conversion factor for the units • metric units • prefix unit to base unit or • base unit to prefix unit • NOTE: the top and bottom of the domino should be equivalent (the same amount or equal)
Steps for Dominoes • 3) If the unit, you are working with, is on top then the “domino” unit needs to go on the bottom • If the unit, you are working with, is on bottom then the “domino” unit needs to go on the top
Steps for Dominoes 4) For metric dominoes: • The “multiplier” goes with the BASE unit, and “1” goes with the PREFIX unit
Steps for Dominoes • 5) Calculate the domino by • multiplying everything on the top and • dividing everything on the bottom.
Money Exchange and Time Examples • Ex #1) 3.3 x 1012 / 6.855 x 10-9 • Ex #2) 44818 nickels to dollars • Ex #3) 7730 dimes to quarters • HW #53 – 78 on the Survival Guide *** Homework problems (#67 – 78 need to be in dominoes to receive credit! ***
Metric and English Conversions 9/22/14
Conversion Examples • Ex #1) 5,620,000 mm to km • Ex #2) 11,200,000,000 ms to years • Ex #3) 384 cm/s to miles/hr
Homework • #85-93 and #102-109 • Due Wed. 9/24/14 • Need to show your work
Pre-Lab #4 Farmers’ Exchange If, 1 chicken = 50 eggs 2 pigs = 5 chickens 2 cows = 9 pigs a) How many pigs can you get for 10 cows? b) How many chickens can you get for 10 cows? c) How many eggs can you get for 10 cows?
Homework • Anybody worried yet? • Marvin, the depressed robot, from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says… (Douglas Adams)
Money Exchange and Time Examples • Ex #1) 44818 nickels to dollars • Ex #2) 7730 dimes to quarters • Ex #3) 0.000587 days to minutes • Ex #4) 11,200,000,000 ms to years *** Homework problems need to be in dominoes to receive credit! *** #1 – 30 is due Friday 8/16/13
