Acetaminophen “Also Known As Tylenol”
What is it? • Molecular formula • C8H9NO2 • Described as a “white, crystalline powder”
What Does It Do? • Analgesia (pain relieving)- Researchers aren’t entirely sure, • but they believe that acetaminophen increases the pain threshold---- • Therefore it increases your tolerance for pain. Speculation is that a nitric oxide pathway may be inhibited by neurotransmitters resulting from consumption of the drug. • Antipyresis (anti + pyr = no fire = no fever!!!)- Acetaminophen • works as an antipyresis agent. The drug can be taken to inhibit • pyrogens (fever causing agents) near the back of the hypothalamus • (heat-controlling centers of the brain). Essentially, its medicinal • benefit comes from stopping the agents that cause fever.
