Science 9 Unit 2 Topic 2: Changes in Matter
Properties are the characteristic ways in which a substance behaves • Properties can CHANGE • Scientist classify changes in matter into 2 categories • Physical and chemical changes
Physical Change • A substance changes in form but not in chemical composition • No new substances are formed • New properties are temporary because a change in state can be reversed • http://app.discoveryeducation.ca/search?Ntt=physical+changes
Chemical Change • Causes one or more new substances to be formed • Can be difficult or impossible to reverse • http://app.discoveryeducation.ca/search?Ntt=physical+changes
Can You Ever be sure about Changes? • If you make 2 or more of the following observations, then a chemical change has probably taken place • Heat is produced or absorbed • The starting material is used up • There is a change in colour • A material with new properties forms • Gas bubbles form in a liquid • A precipitate forms in a liquid • The change is difficult to reverse • http://app.discoveryeducation.ca/search?Ntt=physical+changes
Properties: Chemical or Physical? • Any property that can be observed or measured without forming a new substance is a physical property • Ex. Density • The amount of matter that occupies a certain space • Any property that describes how a substance reacts with another substance when forming a new substance is a chemical property • Combustibility • The ability of a substance to burn in oxygen
Properties: Chemical or Physical? • Physical properties are often further classified as either qualitative or quantitative • Qualitative • Characteristic of a substance that can be described but might not be measured (a quality) • Ex. • Colour • Texture • Malleability • Taste • Smell • Ductility • State • Crystal shape
Properties: Chemical or Physical? • Quantitative • Characteristic of a substance that can be measured numerically (a quantity) • Ex. • Melting/boiling temperature • Density • Viscosity • Solubility • Electrical conductivity • Heat conductivity
