  1. James Chadwick By: McClainLee

  2. Who is James Chadwick? • James Chadwick is a nobel prize winning scientist who is accredited for discovering neutrons

  3. Early life • born in Cheshire, England • 20th October, 1891 • Parents John Joseph Chadwick and Anne Mary Knowles • attended Manchester High School prior to entering Manchester University in 1908

  4. Interest In Science • Graduated from the Honours School of Physics in 1911 • two years under Professor (later Lord) Rutherford in the Physical Laboratory in Manchester • Gained his M.Sc. degree in 1913 • Awarded the 1851 Exhibition Scholarship and proceeded to Berlin to work in the PhysikalischTechnischeReichsanstalt at Charlottenburg under Professor H. Geiger

  5. Leading up to the discovery of Neutrons • During World War I, he was interned in the Zivilgefangenenlager, Ruhleben • After the war, in 1919, he returned to England to accept the Wollaston Studentship at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge • Resumed work under Rutherford • Rutherford had succeeded that year in disintegrating atoms by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles, with the emission of a protonfirst artificial nuclear transformation • Chadwick joined Rutherford in accomplishing much of this

  6. Leading Up To The Discovery Of Neutrons Cont. • Studying atomic disintegration • Saw that atomic number was less than atomic mass • Example: Helium has an atomic mass of 4 but a (positive) charge of 2 • Electrons have no mass • Something besides protons were adding mass

  7. Discovery Of Neutrons • 1932 he proved the existence of neutrons • Ran an experiment based off of Rutherfords work

  8. Neutron Experiment • Projected alpha particles at a berylium target • When the alpha particles were shot at the berylium target it was found that there was no detectable charge. • This discovery made he called neutrons • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTnCkcVOKSE&feature=related

  9. Why neutrons are important • James Chadwick’s discovery of neutrons paved the way for nuclear fission and fusion • Neutrons play a huge role in nuclear power • Led to first man made nuclear chain reaction (Nuclear power) • Led to the making of the first Nuclear Weapons (Though many would argue these may not all be good advancements in science)

  10. Legacy • James Chadwick paved the way for many other scientists after him • With the discovery of the neutron he allowed scientists after his time to run many more experiments on the atom and make many advancements in science

  11. Post neutron discovery • Awarded the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in 1932, • Awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935 • Worked in the United States as Head of the British Mission attached to the Manhattan Project • Sir James was knighted in 1945
