Presentation outline • Introduction • Stećak – Reconstruction and sun simulation • Virtual reconstruction of Sarajevo City Hall • Virtual Sarajevo – Baščaršija project
Introduction • how to preserve cultural heritage? • Bosnia and Herzgovina – heritage destroyed by age and the war • computer graphics should help the archaeologists and historians using advanced technologies
Stećak – Reconstruction and sun simulation • stećak – medieval gravestone • stećak from Donje Zgošće – 14th century
Stećak – Digitalization • one corner damaged • 3D model created by laser scanning • Minolta 910 laser scanner – laser triangulation
Stećak – Reconstruction • damaged corner reconstructed in Maya
Stećak – Sun simulation • orientation of stećaks was important for heretic Christians • stećaks are moved from their original locations and oriented in a wrong way • we created sun simulation to compare orientations towards the sun
Stećak – Sun simulation • movie
Virtual reconstruction of Sarajevo City Hall • Sarajevo City Hall Vijećnica was destroyed in 1992 present appearance reconstruction
Virtual reconstruction of Sarajevo City Hall • 3D model creation process: • site visit, detailed photographs, collecting materials • 3D modeling in 3ds max • texture mapping • illumination • view points creation • optimization • export to VRML • storytelling
Virtual reconstruction of Sarajevo City Hall • virtual model movie
Virtual Sarajevo – Baščaršija project • Internet presentation of old town Sarajevo • multimedial content: • panoramic photos • video walkthroughs • stories • virtual 3D models of cultural heritage objects
Virtual Sarajevo – Baščaršija project • web implementation • database in XML
Conclusion • virtual heritage research in Bosnia and Herzegovina has just started • combination of laser scanning and 3D modeling enabled us to create a collection of virtual models • presentation through interactive CD-s and web • applications expanded with virtual and real avatars telling stories from BH tradition
Future work • stronger collaboration with archaeologists and historians • expanding virtual heritage collection • virtual museum collections • application of digital storytelling techniques in virtual environments
