ADEC Strategic ThinkingFacilitator: Roger Caldwell Board of Directors Discussion on the new world, institutional change, and the role of ADEC in the next 5 years
Four Driving Forces of Change Economic: • Increasing public and private debt, globalization • Entitlement demands (SS, Medicare, Medicaid) Demographic: • First wave of baby boomers turn 62 in 2008 • Becoming more diverse, young, and old Technology: • Primarily IT + materials, biology and their interactions Learning: • New places and methods, greater role for learner
Four Institutional Challenges • Living with increased competition and constrained state and federal funding • Addressing new learners and methods of learning, more diversity, student access/cost • Organizing internally for efficiency and effectiveness, encouraging innovation and external cooperation/collaboration • Managing change – overcoming institutional inertia –cope with change
Planning for a New Environment The future is a VUCA world – U.S. Military: • Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous Our reaction is FAIR – ADEC Think Tank: • Flexible, Agile, Innovative, Responsive ADEC – strategic choices for next 5 years: • ADEC is the sum of the member institutions • ADEC strengths are derived from the ability to focus and institutional cooperation
