Unit 9 – Polynomials and Quadratics • During this unit, we will look at: 1.) Combining like terms in polynomials 2.) Using the distributive property and combining like terms 3.) Identify the greatest common factor (GCF) of polynomials 4.) Factor out the GCF of polynomials 5.) FOIL 6.) Multiply monomials 7.) Reverse FOIL and factoring 8.) Solve quadratic equations using radicals 9.) Solve quadratic equations using factoring 10.) Solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula
Today’s Objective • SWBAT identify monomials. • SWBAT identify polynomials. • SWBAT combine like terms in polynomial expressions.
Don’t worry class! Ms. Ramsel will help you out with everything you need to know. YAY!
Definitions • Monomial – a ______________with just _____ term polynomial one Example: 3x2
Definitions expression • Polynomial – An _________________ made with _______________, ______________, and ________________, which are combined using _____________, __________________, and ______________________, but NOT _____________ constants variables exponents addition subtraction multiplication division
Example of a Polynomial 5xy2 – 3x + 5y3 – 3 Remember that a constant is a term that has no variable! TIP
Today, we are going to combine two polynomials. It will be fun!
Steps for Combining Polynomials 1.) Remove the parenthesis (watch negatives!) 2.) Identify the like terms 3.) Identify the symbol between the like terms 4.) Combine the coefficients ONLY! Remember: You should have only ONE of each term after combining!
Keypoint • Like Terms have the … Same Variable Letter Same Exponent Like 3x and 15x or 3xy2 and 9xy2
Example #1 KNOCK KNOCK!
Example #2 KNOCK KNOCK!
