“esl: classes, teachers and students” By: Andrea G Haines
INSTAC: Standards, Description and Rationale Standard #6: Assessment • The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. • Name the Artifact: Contemporary Issues in Education Research Project. • Date: November 14th, 2013 • Course: EDUC 101 • Brief Description: For this project, I am presenting some issues teachers and students face in a ESL classroom, what it means to be an ESL student, and how can teachers contribute in their learning process. • Rationale: What I understand about standard # 6 is that teachers have to assess (Evaluate) their students to find out the level of education at which they are, to be able to help them develop their learning abilities that would facilitate their academic growth.
*What exactly is ESL?* • “ESL” stands for English as a Second Language. • ESL is a program offered in schools to students that come from different countries and need help learning English. • ESL teachers help students step-by-step with any subject they might be struggling with because of language barriers so they can develop and/or improve their speaking, writing and reading skills.
◘ ESL Opposing Viewpoints ◘ • On an article about Standardized Testing, Monty Neil, director of the National Center for Fair and Open Testing (FairTest), argues about how standardized testing is unfair and harmful for those who speak English as a Second Language.
◘ ESL Opposing Viewpoints ◘ • On an opposite point of view, an article written by Paul Greenberg describes how in order for students to become more efficient at speaking English, they must be expose to it, and for that same reason they should be tested in English, and not allow them to take the test in their language.
What do you think??? Could you agree or disagree with Neil’s argument about the testing not being fair? Why or why not? What do you think Greenberg fears it could happen to this country if we become a Multilingual country like Canada?
