Design of classes • Students took these classes as an academic bridge to help towards degree completion • The classes provided the students with a way to accelerate their pace through levels of Dev Ed classes • Classes were designed in modules • Modules were contextualized for the I-BEST programs: Architectural CAD Drafting and Chemical Dependency Specialist
Accelerated Model • Modules were designed so students could show competency and could move on to new material when ready, in this way they could accelerate their learning. • Using contextualization helped the students tie material from Dev Ed classes into success in their Prof-Tech classwork and their chosen career field Click to add text
Accelerated Model • On average students moved through 1.5 courses per quarter, although some were able to move more quickly. • Students were able to get as far as English 101 and Math 091. Click to add text
Accelerated Model • Of the 36 math students: • 19% DNF • 31% Passed Mth060 • 19%Passed Mth082 • 31% passed Mth 091 • Of the 27 English Students • 30% DNF • 26% Passed ENG084 • 44% Passed ENGL&101 Click to add text
What we learned • Hybrid is better than online • Contextualization makes a difference • Student success was dependent on their level of dedication • The earlier the I-BEST students start the Through-Put classes the better • Having Peer tutors in the classroom was beneficial
What is happening now? • English Through-Put on hold • Dev Ed Math is piloting the Through-Put class for possible use for all students • Fall Quarter Pilot Data • Of the 24 Students • 25% DNF • 37% Completed Mth082 • 30% Completed Mth091 • 8% Completed Mth099
Struggles • Coding and transcripting out • Dev Ed pilot starting at MTH 081 because Mth 060 is below Financial Aid Level
