The mean is the total of all the items divided by the number of items. e.g. The ages of six children are 5, 3, 7, 6, and 2. What is the mean age? 5 + 3 + 1 + 7 + 6 + 2 = 24 24 ÷ 6 = 4 The mean is 4 The mean will not always be a whole number, and will often not even be a possible value. E.g the mean number of children per family in the UK used to be 2.4, but this is not an actual possibility.
