History • Hong Kong Island became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42) • the colony's boundaries were extended in stages to the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories by 1898 • It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War, after which the British resumed control until 1997, when the PRC regained sovereignty

  10. Streetmarkets • Characteristic of Hong Kong, usually selling regular groceries, clothes, bags or some cheap electronic knockoffs. • Ladies Market • Temple Street • Apliu Street • Stanley Market

  11. Ladies Market • Don't be fooled by the name. It is for both sexes for finding cheap clothes, toys, knockoff and fake labels

  12. Temple Street • Sold items are the same as in the Ladies Market, but there are more street food vendors, a handful of fortune tellers and a few Chinese opera singers • Illustrated in hundreds of Cantonese films

  13. Apliu Street • This is the place where you can find cheap computer goods, integrated circuit, peripherals and accessories

  14. Stanley Market • A place for tourists rather than locals, shops sell everything from luxury luggage items to cheap brand name clothes

  15. Discounts and haggling • Some stores , particularly in small shops, are willing to negotiate on price. They will give you a small discount or additional merchandise if you just ask.

  16. Gourmet Paradise • Not only is it a showcase of Chinese cuisines with huge regional varieties, but there are also excellent Asian and Western choices • You can also find some Western restaurants that are featured in the Michelin guide to Hong Kong.

  17. Dim sum • Dim sum, literally means 'to touch (your) heart', is possibly the best known Cantonese dish • Served at breakfast • pork dumplings • barbecued pork buns • steamed shrimp dumplings

  18. Siu Mei • Siu mei is pork roasted over an open fire or a huge wood burning rotisserie oven. With the addition of a slightly crispy honey sauce layer, the final taste is of a unique, deep barbecue flavour. 

  19. Tong Sui • A popular Cantonese dessert is a sweet soup called tong sui. Popular versions are usually made with black sesame paste, walnuts or sago which are usually sticky in texture.

  21. Chinese Lunar New Year • Chinese Lunar New Year although it actually is lunisolar – is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays • It marks the end of the winter season • begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar

  22. Cheung Chau Bun Festival • Takes place on the tiny island of Cheung Chau • Involved competitions with people climbing bun towers to snatch buns

  23. Tuen Ng Festival • This is a festival in memory of a national hero from the Spring and Autumn Period of Chinese history • Dragon boat races • Glutinous rice dumplings

  24. Mid Autumn Festival • This festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month • Moon cakes which contain lotus seed paste and duck egg yolks

  25. Christmas • Christmas is celebrated Hong Kong style • Hong Kong is adorned using traditional Western Christmas decorations

City University of Hong Kong • Was established in 1984 • Was a Polytechnic at the beginning • Was established as City University of Hong Kong in 1994 • Has now, 20,000 students enrolled in more than 130 programmes • Has 22 Academic Departments • Has 7 Colleges and Schools. • Rank 15th in Asia and 129 in the world

  29. Interactive Multimedia and Virtual Reality Laboratory(IMVR Lab) • SGI Tezro system • Self-developed 3D graphics engines on Linux. • A specialized 3-D projection system, cyber-gloves and motion trackers support the Department's research into interactive media technology.

  30. Image Computing Laboratory • Consists of state of the art image and video capturing workstations, as well as high-end computing platforms for pattern recognition, image analysis and synthesis research • Multimedia Applications Development Laboratory (MADLab)

  31. 3D Motion Capture Laboratory • Recording human movement in 3D. • Equipped with an optical motion capture system to support the real-time capture of 3D human motions. • Real-time dance education • Interactive 3D games
