History • Hong Kong Island became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42) • the colony's boundaries were extended in stages to the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories by 1898 • It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War, after which the British resumed control until 1997, when the PRC regained sovereignty

Ladies Market • Don't be fooled by the name. It is for both sexes for finding cheap clothes, toys, knockoff and fake labels
Temple Street • Sold items are the same as in the Ladies Market, but there are more street food vendors, a handful of fortune tellers and a few Chinese opera singers • Illustrated in hundreds of Cantonese films
Apliu Street • This is the place where you can find cheap computer goods, integrated circuit, peripherals and accessories
Stanley Market • A place for tourists rather than locals, shops sell everything from luxury luggage items to cheap brand name clothes
Discounts and haggling • Some stores , particularly in small shops, are willing to negotiate on price. They will give you a small discount or additional merchandise if you just ask.
Gourmet Paradise • Not only is it a showcase of Chinese cuisines with huge regional varieties, but there are also excellent Asian and Western choices • You can also find some Western restaurants that are featured in the Michelin guide to Hong Kong.
Dim sum • Dim sum, literally means 'to touch (your) heart', is possibly the best known Cantonese dish • Served at breakfast • pork dumplings • barbecued pork buns • steamed shrimp dumplings
Siu Mei • Siu mei is pork roasted over an open fire or a huge wood burning rotisserie oven. With the addition of a slightly crispy honey sauce layer, the final taste is of a unique, deep barbecue flavour.
Tong Sui • A popular Cantonese dessert is a sweet soup called tong sui. Popular versions are usually made with black sesame paste, walnuts or sago which are usually sticky in texture.

Mid Autumn Festival • This festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month • Moon cakes which contain lotus seed paste and duck egg yolks
Christmas • Christmas is celebrated Hong Kong style • Hong Kong is adorned using traditional Western Christmas decorations
