Background • State of Kansas is consolidating network infrastructures • Kan-ed and KanWin will become a single IT solution for Kansas • Network “core” with 1,200 connected facilities • Kan-ed and KanWin will remain as organizations and provide their unique services
FCC Pilot Project • Spring 2007, FCC pilot proposal submitted • Included participants from Kan-ed, KDHE, KHA, KHPA and KUMC • Proposed to expand health care network in Kansas and support cost • Also proposed to connect to National Health Information Network (NHIN) • Pilot project was awarded in December 2007
Kansas Health Care Network • Tentatively named Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) • Will reside as private layer (VPN) on new state network • Local connections will be supported by FCC funding
KHIN Connections • Current Kan-ed connected hospitals will transition to KHIN in coming months • Costs will be supported by FCC • Will continue to be Kan-ed members • Other hospitals will be eligible to receive a KHIN connection • All participating hospitals will provide a letter of agency (LOA)
KHIN Benefits • No cost for local connection (T1) • Connected to NHIN • Connected to Internet2 • Private, reliable network for health care activities • Telemedicine • Health Information Exchange (HIE) • Access to other emerging health technologies
Long Term Goals of FCC Project • Provide efficient, high quality health care • Extend state funding • Assist with state network consolidation • Expand health care network • Complement state-supported H4C and HIE initiatives • Ensure long-term success of health networking in Kansas
