  1. Ervaringenmetduurzameveehouderijinitiatievenin ontwikkelingssamenwerkingen Nederlandsemelkveehouderij Katrien van’t HooftETC Adviesgroep Nederland 18-01-2010, DIO

  2. Personal intro • Veterinary medicine in Utrecht, NL • MSc Management of Agricultural Knowledge Systems (MAKS) • 1985-1997 Latin America - projects with smallholders, (dairy) farmer organisations, government, educational centres • 1998-2007 Consultant ETC/Compas: endogenous development • Since 2005: Endogenous Livestock Development (ELD) network • Since 2007: ETC-NL sustainable dairy projects • Various books and films • Beyond 2009: N-S exchanges re. sustainable agriculture (eg. Smart Footprint Farming, Dutch farm visit services)

  3. A people-centred vision on livestock development

  4. Endogenous means…. growing from within Endogenous livestock development …supporting animal husbandry systems based on livestock keepers’ own innovative strategies, knowledge and resources as well as the perception of wellbeing and improvement.

  5. Doelstellingen ELD netwerk • Mensen & organisaties rond duurzame veehouderij meer met elkaar in contact brengen - Community of Practice • In veehouderij initiatieven: stimuleren people-focus ipv. productivity focus • In landbouw/voedsel/klimaat initiatieven: meer focus op veehouderij

  6. Elements of ELD • Value/culture-based development: build on what you have! • Regional marketing & foodsystems (vs. export) • Integrated agriculture - close nutrient cycles at various levels (personal, farm, region, international) • Diversification and biodiversity • Economical, social & environmental sustainability Ethnovet medicine is integrated part of ELD

  7. Optimising existing systems vs. maximising productivity

  8. 6. Rural as well as urban livestock keeping

  9. Combining old and new

  10. Look at potential of local practices

  11. Differentiate between 4 major livestock keeping systems High input, low diversity 3 4 Extensive land use Intensive land use 2 1 Low input, high diversity

  12. In developing countries

  13. Optimising low-input systems • Vaccination • Parasites control • Water supply • Salt – minerals • Feeding dry season • Shelter • Extra care

  14. Mixed farming systems Organic fertilizer Composting Draft power Use of crop-residues Crop rotation Cover crops

  15. Smallholder dairy - Send a Cow – Uganda - Integration of livestock, crops, forestry - 0-grazing system - Passing-on the Gift programme

  16. improving local traction for food security in southern Mozambique

  17. Pastoral systems Agro-forestry systems Organic fertilizer Using crop residues Reduction of bush-encroachment Reduction of wildfires

  18. Example pastoralism: improving local practices re. pasture management and controlled burning, on Borana Plateau, Ethiopia

  19. Europe: traditional pig breeding & marketing in Corsica

  20. In Netherlands – western Europe

  21. Optimising intensive systems: more sustainable dairy in NL Since 1965 intensive dairy farming

  22. Environmental problems + new policies to handle manure and minerals

  23. Study groups of conventional dairy farmers: new thinking & joint learning

  24. Soil as basis • less fertiliser on fields • less concentrates • feed cow as ruminant again

  25. Soil-plant-animal cycle thinking

  26. Economic efficiency, healthier soils and environment

  27. Ethnovet: phytotherapy in Netherlands

  28. Re-valueing local breeds

  29. The modern dairy farm!
