  2. “No great advance has been made in science, politics, or religion without controversy.”-Lyman Beecher Works: Remedy for Duelling (New York, 1809), Plea for the West, Six Sermons on Temperance, Sermons on Various Occasions (1842), Views in Theology, Skepticism, Lectures on Various Occasions, Political Atheism. Significance: He co-founded the American Temperance Society, an organization that abstained from alcohol and promoted abolition of slavery. He was also the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who would become a prominent abolitionist. He also helped start off the abolitionist movement, and his many influential essays and debates converted many to his cause.
