Required Aggregated Data Rates for 11ah Use Cases High 50Mbps Low Outdoor Indoor Minyoung Park, Intel Corp.
915 MHz band in US: 902~928 MHz (26 MHz wide) • Other countries even less available • Typically requires three non-overlapping channels to mitigate co-channel interference • 2.5 MHz channel • 802.11ac 20 MHz 1/8 down-clocking • PHY rates: 0.8~10.8 Mbps (one stream) • 5 MHz channel • 802.11ac 40 MHz 1/8 down-clocking • PHY rates : 1.7 ~ 25 Mbps (one stream), ~50 Mbps (two streams) • Supporting PHY rates higher than 50 Mbps is challenging • 10 MHz or 20 MHz wide channel only one or two non-overlapping channels • More than two antennas hard to fit antennas in a device (half wave length ~ 17 cm) PHY Rates Minyoung Park, Intel Corp.
Sub 1 GHz bands have limited frequency spectrum • Supporting aggregated PHY rate higher than 50 Mbps is challenging in sub 1 GHz bands • Hard to support use cases that require high data rates • Outdoor/indoor surveillance use cases (1c/2a) • Indoor home entertainment (2b) • 802.11ah should support the use cases that require aggregated PHY rate less than 50 Mbps Conclusions Minyoung Park, Intel Corp.
