The story so far… • The point of our series:to help us fall in love with Jesus again,by letting Matthew reveal him to us… • Matthew’s opening section • Ch 1&2 – Dramatic introduction of Jesus:the promised king, fulfilment of OT, God with us! • Ch 3&4 – The humanity of Jesus:like us in every way but without sin – he understands! • Ch 5-7 – Jesus’ manifesto, His vision of His kingdom • Matthew’s second section – discipleship: a choice • What do people make of this Jesus? • Does he live up to his words? • Disciples still asking the question who is this man Jesus?
Matthew 8&9 – WHO IS THIS JESUS? Mat 7:28 – 8:17, 9:2-8 Key word 1: AUTHORITY! “the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law” (7:28-29) “just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (8:8-9) “When evening came, many who were bought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick” (8:16) “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…” then he said to the paralytic, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.” (9:6-8)
AUTHORITY The RIGHT and POWER to implement your will… Where does it come from? “just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” (8:8-9) The ultimate source… “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority” (Acts 1:7, Jesus speaking to his disciples)
Matthew 8&9 – WHO IS THIS JESUS? Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” Mat 8&9: 3 sets of 3 miracles confirm this point! • The Jewish leper: Authority to heal (cleanse) the unclean • The gentile servant: Authority to heal with a word • Peter’s mother-in-law: Authority to heal in everyday situations • Calming the storm: Authority over nature • The demonised men: Authority over the forces of evil • The paralytic: Authority to forgive sins • Dead girl & sick woman: Authority over long-term sickness & over death • Blind men: Authority to bring new sight • Dumb man: Authority to restore what the enemy has blocked
Jesus’ authority is un-doubtable… BUT… What kind of authority figure is he? What motivates Jesus to exercise his authority?
Matthew 9:35-36 NIV 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 8&9 – WHO IS THIS JESUS? Key word 1: AUTHORITY Key word 2: COMPASSION Talked about our response to his compassion… What is our response to his authority? Access it! (How? FAITH) Yield to it! (8:18-22, 9:9) Wield it! (What comes next after 28:18?(with compassion!)What comes next after Chs.8-9?)
