RSC’s CPD frameworks • RSC strongly encourage all members to engage in CPD – a comprehensive framework is available for professional members • Since April 2000, Postgraduate students have had access to the Postgraduate Skills Record (PSR) • Since September 2002, Undergraduate students have had access to the Undergraduate Skills Record (USR)
What is the PSR? • A CPD framework tailored to the development needs of postgraduate students of the chemical sciences • Designed after extensive consultation with industry, academic supervisors and students • Developed with funding from DfES
Why was the PSR developed? • Workshops “Chemistry in the UK – will it survive?” • Senior chemists from academia and industry • Communication, team working, problem solving – essential skills for the new graduate • Rapidly changing and increasingly competitive world of industry
Why was the PSR developed? • ‘Change and diversity: the challenges facing chemistry higher education’ • Noted criticisms made by employers of weaknesses in inter-personal skills among a proportion of chemistry graduates • Develop a paper and internet based system for recording and assessing skills PSR
Research related skills Interpersonal skills Transferable skills What is the PSR? • Records level of scientific and non-scientific attainment at three phases of postgraduate study • Emphasis is on self-assessment
Overview of the PSR • Project Specific Skills • Induction • Personal Information • PhD Progress Plan • Skills Audit • Skills profile • CPD
Skills Audit • Six categories of skills self-assessed • throughout the PhD • Planning & Organisation • Handling Information • Communication Skills • Working with Others • Scientific & Practical • Improving Learning & Performance
Skills Audit • Series of statements associated with each • specific skill • Students rate themselves against each • statement according to the scale given • Identify development targets for each skill • Each phase to be repeated, reflecting on • past achievements and development • targets/plans
Skills Profile • A summary of skills, achievements and personal development • Generated from the outcome of the Skills Audit • Useful for Postgraduates when: a) Applying for jobs b) Applying for membership of RSC
Benefits of using the PSR • Method to critically assess skills • Permanent record of performance & • development • Preparation of CVs and job interviews • Serves as a ‘launch pad’ into Continuing • Professional Development • Direct relevance to employability
Use of PSR • Successfully launched in 2000 • 87% of UK and Ireland members of HCUK requested copies • Paper based version of PSR available for all postgraduate chemical scientists • New format • On-line version available to RSC members
What the employers say... “I strongly recommend every postgraduate in the chemical sciences, irrespective of their proposed career path, to complete the PSR honestly and diligently, providing a framework to identify skills gaps and address these effectively.” Dr D Alker, Discovery Staffing Group Manager, Pfizer
