  2. BC Surgical Oncology Network Vision • Equitable, accessible and integrated cancer surgery for British Columbians. Mission • By providing surgeons with continuing medical education, communications, practice guidelines and research and outcomes evaluation, the Council & Network will enable the best possible surgical oncology care for all people in British Columbia.

  3. BROAD SON GOALS Timely Access • Establish standards Improved Care Outcomes • Reduce variation in surgical practice • Develop resource standards Learning • Research, training and education Sustainability • Support for evidence-based decision making • Partnerships with Health Authorities

SON Members Council Executive Co-chairs: Noelle Davis, BC Cancer Agency Con Rusnak, Vancouver Island Health Authority Representative from each Health Authority 2 Community representatives (currently Nanaimo and Kamloops) Surgical Tumour Group Chairs Chairs from various regions in BC Groups to include representatives from each region

Network Infrastructure Committees • Clinical Practice • Continuing Medical Education • Communications • Research & Outcomes Evaluation Surgical Tumour Groups • 13 Tumour Sites • Chair appointed, committees currently being populated. Staff in Place • Administrative support, analytical/statistical and nursing support.

Current Activities Initiated an infrastructure survey of facilities in BC regions Future Plans Develop resource based standards Identify consistent format for clinical practice guidelines review and vet all clinical practice guidelines from Surgical Tumour Groups Working closely with Health Authorities and Ministry of Health Clinical Practice Committee

  11. Current Activities Melanoma update being taken around province Interior HA (May 2003) Fraser Valley HA (October 2003) Northern HA (Jan 23, 2004) VIHA, VCHA to be determined Future Plans Next update will be in Head & Neck Continuing Medical Education Committee

Current Activities BCCA Annual Conference Rectal Cancer (2003) Hot Topics in Surgical Oncology (2004) Partnership with BC Surgical Society presented at May update co-host of Saturday program Future Plans Continue to work with BC Surgical Society Breast Cancer Update currently being planned Continuing Medical Education Committee

Current Activities Internet Course on Using OVID to search Medline Posted two lectures from 2003 rectal cancer conference on medicalrounds.com Future Plans Additional courses delivered via Internet Continue to use information technology to deliver knowledge directly to surgeons in the community Continuing Medical Education Committee

Surgical Tumour GroupsGoals Immediate • Ensure representation from all regions • Identify key issues/targets for improved outcomes in BC • Provide regular input into SON committees Intermediate Goals (1-5 years) • Develop evidence-based guidelines for tumour group • Publicize standard through BCCA, SON newsletter, education
