  2. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 1 – Preparation Remove all loose granules, dirt and debris, taking care to preserve the integrity of the existing asphalt membrane. Any unsound areas in the roof deck, insulation or flashing must be repaired or replaced. All blisters, delaminations, wrinkles and loose areas must be cut away to sound substrate, or cut open and nailed flat to the deck. Ensure that the roof deck has positive slope to drain and that the moisture content of the existing substrate, insulation and deck does not exceed 15%. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  3. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 2 – Cleaning & Priming Roof surfaces must be clean, dry, structurally sound, stable, well secured, and free of excessive ponding water. Sweep roof thoroughly using a stiff broom. Wash all surfaces using United Cleaning Concentrate (UCC) or comparable biodegradable cleaner to remove any remaining dirt and other contamination. Heavy deposits of dirt or contamination may require additional agitation with a stiff-bristle broom or similar mechanical scrubber. If the roof has been coated with aluminized asphalt, contact UNITED COATINGS for additional preparation instructions. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  4. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 3 – Repair Reinforce repaired areas by encapsulating an appropriate-size piece of ROOF MATE Mesh or ROOF MATE Fabric into ROOF MATE Basecoat, so that it totally covers the repaired area. Repaired areas can also be reinforced by applying a heavy coat of ROOF MATE Butter Grade, using a brush or roller. Apply ROOF MATE Butter Grade in two heavy coats, using a brush or roller, to achieve a total thickness of 60 to 80 mils (1,524 to 2,032 microns), extending the Butter Grade a minimum of 1” (2.3 cm) on all sides of the detail. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  5. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING 1 2 STEP 4 – Details All cracks and splits shall be treated with a strip-coat of ROOF MATE Butter Grade, centered over the crack and extending 1” (2.5 cm) to either side. Voids or holes larger than 1/8" (3 mm) in width shall be filled and leveled with ROOF MATE Butter Grade. Reinforce all split seams, roof termination points, vertical/horizontal interfaces, drains, scuppers, openings, protrusions, and around roof mounted equipment, using either ROOF MATE Butter Grade, or with ROOF MATE Mesh embedded into ROOF MATE Basecoat or Butter Grade. If using ROOF MATE Butter Grade, apply two heavy coats with a brush or roller to achieve a total thickness of 60 to 80 mils (1,524 to 2,032 microns). If using ROOF MATE Mesh, apply ROOF MATE Basecoat or Butter Grade liberally around the area to be reinforced. While the material is still wet, embed a strip of ROOF MATE Mesh, centered over the detail, applying additional material to totally encapsulate the reinforcement fabric. 3 4 <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  6. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 5 – Full Fabric Reinforcement Reinforce roofs exhibiting a high degree of surface degradation, split seams, etc., by embedding 40” (102 cm) wide rolls of ROOF MATE Fabric into ROOF MATE Basecoat or Unibase over the entire surface. Sandwich the fabric between two coats of ROOF MATE Basecoat, each applied at the rate of 1 to 1½ gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.4 to .6 l/m²). If using Unibase, roll out a 4’ to 10’ (1.2 to 2.5 m) length of fabric and either spray apply or pour Unibase evenly over the top side at the rate of approximately 2 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.8 l/m²). Work the coating evenly throughout the fabric using a broom or roller so that it is totally encapsulated, eliminating any air pockets, wrinkles or gaps, and allowing the fabric to conform to the surface contours. Overlap consecutive passes of ROOF MATE Fabric a minimum of 2” (5 cm) on each side, taking extra care to ensure that all edges are thoroughly saturated, tight and secure. Note: This system is designed for application to aged modified roofs only. For new modified bitumen roofs, contact UNITED COATINGS’ Technical Service Department for specific recommendations. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  7. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 6 – Coating Application Apply 1 to 4 separate coats of ROOF MATE, using airless spray or roller, at the total rate of 1.6 to 6.2 gallons per 100 sq. ft. (.65 to 2.5 l/m²), depending on full fabric application, desired warranty and/or specification requirements. Create a self-terminating flashing by extending the topcoat a minimum of 3” (7.5 cm) above all protrusions, parapet walls, etc. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT

  8. ROOF MATE Step-By-Step OverMODIFIED BITUMEN ROOFING STEP 7 – Options Apply walk pads, ceramic roofing granules or Rhino Top as required to demarcate walkways and service areas, and/or provide non-skid characteristics. To enhance dirt release characteristics in problem areas, apply a coat of Acrysheen, which imparts a slick, semi-gloss finish that aids in maintaining a clean surface. *Rhino Top is a tough acrylic coating that is available in both smooth and textured formulations. It is ideally suited for horizontal surfaces that receive regular foot traffic. <BACKMAIN MENUNEXT>EXIT
